SJVN Limited, a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Chhattisgarh and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL) for the development of an 1800 MW Pumped Storage Project (PSP) at Kotpali in Chhattisgarh.

Strategic Importance of the Project

The Kotpali PSP, to be located in Balrampur District, Chhattisgarh, is a closed-loop, off-stream pumped storage project that will help stabilize renewable energy supply by storing excess energy during non-peak hours and releasing it during peak demand.

  • The project is designed to generate approximately 3967 Million Units (MU) of electricity annually.
  • This initiative aligns with India’s commitment to renewable energy transition, ensuring energy security and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
  • PSPs play a crucial role in maintaining grid stability as India expands its solar and wind energy capacity.

Investment and Economic Impact

The Kotpali PSP project will involve an estimated investment of ₹9500 crore, marking a significant boost to Chhattisgarh’s energy infrastructure and economic growth.

  • Employment Generation: The project is expected to create 5000 direct and indirect jobs during its development phase.
  • Industrial Growth: The initiative will attract investment, drive infrastructure development, and contribute to Chhattisgarh’s economic expansion.
  • Sustainable Development: As a renewable energy storage solution, the project will enhance energy efficiency and reliability in the region.
