A powerful car bomb explosion ripped through the Cairo Hotel in Beledweyne, Somalia, on Tuesday, setting off a prolonged gun battle between Al-Shabab militants and Somali security forces. The attack has resulted in several deaths, though the exact casualty count remains unclear.

The attack occurred in the Hiran region, about 335 km north of Mogadishu, an area that serves as a strategic base for Somali government officials and military commanders fighting against Al-Shabab. The Al-Qaida-linked militant group, which has waged an insurgency against Somalia’s federal government, has since claimed responsibility for the deadly assault.

Hotel Used by Military Officers and Elders

The Cairo Hotel is a key location in Beledweyne, housing traditional elders and military officials involved in the ongoing government offensive against Al-Shabab. The militant group has previously targeted such facilities to undermine government stability and intimidate local leadership.

Resident Muhsin Abdullahi reported that at least six people, including two well-known elders, had been killed. Another witness, Hussein Jeelle Raage, stated that three of his family members were among the 11 people confirmed dead. However, official sources have yet to release a confirmed death toll.

Footage shared on social media showed thick smoke billowing from the destroyed hotel building, highlighting the extent of the destruction caused by the car bomb and ensuing gunfight.

Al-Shabab’s Continued Attacks in Somalia

Al-Shabab, an Al-Qaida-affiliated group, has been actively waging an insurgency against Somalia’s government for years. The militant organization controls large parts of rural Somalia and frequently carries out bombings and assassinations targeting:
