Remarks come amid speculation over their 2027 World Cup participation.
Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed strong support for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to continue their One Day International (ODI) careers if they remain in good form. The statement comes amid growing speculation about the future of these two modern-day legends, especially in light of the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
Speaking to the media, Ganguly said, “They are phenomenal in ODIs. Form is the ultimate criterion. If they are performing and contributing to the team’s success, they should keep playing, regardless of their age.”
Both Kohli and Rohit have been non-committal when asked about their plans beyond the current cricket cycle. Neither has confirmed whether they are targeting the 2027 World Cup, but their recent performances have shown that they still have plenty to offer. Kohli, known for his unmatched consistency, and Rohit, famed for his big-match temperament and ability to play long innings, remain pillars of the Indian batting line-up.
Ganguly, who has himself experienced the challenges of balancing performance with longevity, emphasised that selection should be based on merit and form, not on birth certificates. “If you are still at your peak and delivering match-winning performances, there’s no reason to walk away,” he said.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also not made any official statement about a potential transition plan for the ODI squad. With younger talents like Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Yashasvi Jaiswal making their mark, there is an ongoing discussion about how best to manage the generational shift without losing experienced match-winners.
While the 2027 World Cup is still some time away, Indian cricket fans are already debating whether the combination of youth and experience will be the winning formula. For now, with Ganguly’s endorsement, Kohli and Rohit’s immediate ODI future seems secure, provided they keep delivering the goods.
As the cricketing calendar continues with high-profile series and tournaments, all eyes will remain on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to see if they maintain their world-class standards and continue to dominate the ODI arena. Their performances over the next couple of years will likely determine whether they take the field in the 2027 World Cup — or pass the baton to the next generation.
