Tragedy struck in Southern California on Thursday when a small plane crashed into the rooftop of a commercial building in Fullerton, Orange County. The crash resulted in two fatalities and left 18 others injured, 10 of whom were rushed to the hospital with severe injuries, while eight were treated at the scene.

Incident Details

The crash occurred at approximately 2:09 PM, according to Fullerton police spokesperson Kristy Wells. Firefighters and police swiftly arrived at the site, extinguishing a fire ignited by the crash and evacuating surrounding businesses.

The building, home to Michael Nicholas Designs, a furniture upholstery manufacturer, sustained extensive damage. The structure housed sewing machines and textile stock, which were impacted by the explosion.

Witness Accounts and Initial Reports

Footage captured by security cameras from Rucci Forge, a nearby wheel manufacturer, revealed the moment the plane crashed. A fiery explosion erupted, sending a plume of black smoke into the air. The plane appeared to tilt on its side before crashing into the building.

Unverified videos circulating on social media claim to show the crash, though these accounts remain unconfirmed by authorities.

Flight and Aircraft Information

Flight-tracking platform FlightAware indicated that the aircraft was a four-seat, single-engine plane. The crash occurred about a minute after takeoff near the Fullerton Municipal Airport, a general aviation hub approximately 10 kilometers from Disneyland. The airport features one runway and a heliport and is surrounded by a mix of residential neighborhoods and commercial warehouses.

It remains unclear whether those injured were aboard the aircraft or on the ground. The exact model of the plane and the reasons for the crash are under investigation.

Context and Past Incidents

This is not the first aviation accident near the Fullerton Municipal Airport. In November of the previous year, another four-seat plane crashed into a tree a half-mile from the airport during an emergency landing shortly after takeoff. Both occupants sustained moderate injuries.

Response and Investigation

Emergency services acted promptly, containing the fire and ensuring the safety of nearby businesses and residents. Investigators will now examine the wreckage and gather details to determine the cause of the crash.
