In a serious late-night incident, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, narrowly escaped a major mishap when a speeding truck collided with vehicles in his convoy near Goraul in Hajipur, Bihar. The crash left two people seriously injured, while several others sustained minor injuries.
The accident occurred on National Highway 22 around 2 am on Saturday, June 7, 2025, when Yadav’s convoy had stopped briefly for tea during his journey from Madhepura to Patna.
The Incident: A Sudden, Frightening Crash
As per eyewitness accounts, Tejashwi Yadav was sipping tea at a roadside stall, when a high-speed truck lost control and rammed into three to four vehicles parked as part of the convoy.
The collision injured a sub-inspector, a constable, and Yadav’s personal driver, all of whom were part of the escort team providing security. They were immediately rushed to the Sadar Hospital in Hajipur.
Fortunately, Tejashwi Yadav was standing just five feet away from the spot of the crash and escaped unhurt. Speaking to the media shortly afterward, the RJD leader shared his sense of how close the brush with death was:
“The truck crashed just five feet from where I stood. Had there been even a slight imbalance, the vehicle could have hit us directly.”
Immediate Aftermath and Hospital Visit
Following the crash, Tejashwi Yadav visited Sadar Hospital to check on the condition of his injured team members. He was accompanied by RJD MLA Dr. Mukesh Roshan, Vaishali’s civil surgeon, and other administrative officials. The injured are currently under medical supervision, with the driver and constable in critical condition but stable as per early reports.
Demands for Accountability and Investigation
In his media address, Tejashwi Yadav emphasized the growing threat of road accidents in India. He asserted that accountability must be established without delay:
“It does not matter who they are—action must be taken. Road accidents are becoming increasingly common, and most deaths in the country are happening due to such crashes.”
The RJD MLA from Vaishali, Dr. Mukesh Roshan, also expressed concern and questioned whether the truck driver may have been driving under the influence of alcohol. He confirmed that a formal complaint has been filed with the local police, demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.
Truck Driver’s Responsibility: Under Scrutiny
While initial reports suggest negligence and speeding on the part of the truck driver, authorities are yet to determine whether alcohol or fatigue played a role. The driver reportedly fled the scene after the collision, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend him.
Police sources have confirmed that they are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby toll plazas and petrol stations to trace the vehicle’s movements and identify the owner and operator of the truck.
A Pattern of Risk: Political Convoy Accidents
This is not the first time that a political leader’s convoy has been involved in a road accident in Bihar. In recent years, high-speed crashes and poor highway monitoring have contributed to a string of incidents involving:
-
Political leaders
-
Administrative officials
-
Public events and election rallies
With India having one of the highest road accident rates globally, such incidents raise serious questions about VIP security protocols and road traffic regulation enforcement.
Tejashwi Yadav: A High-Profile Target
As a former Deputy Chief Minister, Tejashwi Yadav remains a high-profile political figure in Bihar, often traveling extensively for party work, rallies, and organizational meetings. His presence in Madhepura and other politically volatile regions continues to make security arrangements around him critical and sensitive.
Sources in the RJD said that his schedule was not publicly announced due to security reasons, yet the convoy’s visibility and route patterns make it susceptible to accidental or deliberate threats.
Public and Political Reactions
News of the incident spread quickly across political circles and social media, with concern and outrage being expressed by political leaders and citizens alike.
While Tejashwi Yadav escaped unharmed, the injuries to his convoy members have sparked calls for the Bihar government to:
-
Improve highway surveillance systems
-
Enforce stricter penalties on speeding and intoxicated drivers
-
Install early-warning systems and convoy escort training protocols
Senior RJD leaders and allies have also demanded that Union and State Transport Ministries take a hard look at road safety audits and consider mandatory driver rest checks on commercial vehicles.
A Broader Problem: India's Deadly Roads
India sees nearly 1.5 lakh road accident deaths annually, with speeding and alcohol among the top causes. In many regions, especially semi-urban and highway zones, enforcement remains lax and infrastructure inadequate.
The National Highway 22 where the accident occurred is known for its high traffic density, narrow shoulders, and frequent bottlenecks, making it a dangerous stretch, particularly during night hours.
Conclusion: A Wake-Up Call for VIP Safety and Road Reforms
The narrow escape of Tejashwi Yadav is a stark reminder of the growing perils on Indian highways. While the RJD leader’s life was spared, the injuries to his team underscore how close the tragedy could have been.
This incident is not merely a matter of VIP security, but a national issue of road safety. As investigations continue, both the public and the political establishment must push for accountability, safer infrastructure, and stringent action against reckless drivers.
