A SpiceJet aircraft operating from Kandla airport to Mumbai faced a technical scare on Saturday after it reportedly lost a wheel shortly after take-off. Despite the mechanical fault, the aircraft managed to land safely at Mumbai airport, and all passengers and crew onboard were declared safe.
The airline confirmed the incident in a press release, stating that the landing was normal and carried out without any further issues. The safe handling of the situation by the flight crew ensured that passengers did not face any injury or panic during the emergency landing.
According to preliminary reports, the missing wheel was noticed after take-off, prompting aviation authorities to remain on alert until the plane touched down in Mumbai. Emergency services were kept on standby at the Mumbai airport, but they were not required as the landing was smooth.
SpiceJet, which has previously faced scrutiny over multiple safety-related incidents, reiterated that passenger safety remains its highest priority. The airline said that it is working in coordination with aviation authorities to identify the exact cause of the technical issue.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter to ensure compliance with safety protocols and to rule out any lapses in maintenance or operations.
This incident comes at a time when India’s aviation sector has been witnessing a sharp rise in passenger traffic, making air safety standards even more crucial. Experts believe such occurrences, though rare, highlight the need for robust pre-flight checks, timely aircraft maintenance, and better safety mechanisms to prevent mid-air risks.
Passengers on the affected flight, though shaken initially by the news, expressed relief and gratitude towards the crew for managing the landing efficiently. Many said that they were unaware of the seriousness of the issue until after touchdown, which helped maintain calm inside the cabin.
The safe conclusion of this flight has once again sparked discussions around the safety preparedness of airlines in India. With increasing competition and operational pressure, maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols will remain the top priority for both airlines and regulators
