A major aviation incident was averted on Tuesday after a SpiceJet flight bound for Leh was forced to return to Delhi shortly after takeoff due to an engine failure. The aircraft, operating as SG121, had departed from the national capital’s Indira Gandhi International Airport when the crew detected a technical malfunction in one of its engines mid-air.

According to sources familiar with the development, the Leh-bound flight encountered engine trouble soon after departure. As a precautionary measure, the pilots made the decision to turn the aircraft around and head back to Delhi. Around 150 people, including passengers and crew members, were onboard the flight at the time of the incident.

The aircraft involved in the incident was a Boeing 737, a widely used narrow-body jet deployed extensively on domestic routes across India. Upon detecting the technical snag, the flight crew followed standard aviation safety protocols. An emergency was declared at the airport to ensure priority landing clearance and the availability of fire and medical services on standby.

In an official statement, SpiceJet confirmed that the flight operating from Delhi to Leh had returned to the departure airport after experiencing a technical issue. The airline spokesperson stated, “The aircraft landed safely in Delhi, and all passengers were disembarked normally.” The airline further added that comprehensive inspections of the aircraft would be conducted by its engineering and maintenance teams.

The swift and safe handling of the situation underscores the emphasis on aviation safety protocols in India’s rapidly growing aviation sector. Passengers onboard reportedly experienced anxiety during the return, but airline staff are said to have maintained calm and provided reassurance throughout the process. Once the aircraft landed safely, passengers were assisted and disembarked in an orderly manner. There were no reports of injuries.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to review the incident as part of routine regulatory oversight. Aviation authorities typically examine such occurrences to determine the cause, assess maintenance records, and ensure compliance with safety standards.

This development comes at a time when SpiceJet is actively working on strengthening its operational capabilities. Last week, the airline announced plans to expand its fleet to approximately 60 aircraft. The expansion strategy includes a mix of wet leases and damp leases, along with the phased return of grounded planes into active service.

Wet leasing refers to arrangements where an airline leases aircraft along with crew, maintenance, and insurance from another operator. Damp leasing typically involves leasing the aircraft and cockpit crew, while the airline provides cabin crew. These strategies allow carriers to increase capacity quickly while managing operational risks.

SpiceJet’s domestic market share has shown signs of recovery in recent months. According to company disclosures, its market share increased to 4.3 per cent in December from 1.9 per cent in September last year. The growth was reportedly driven by a 56 per cent rise in capacity during the December quarter.

The airline has set ambitious targets for the coming months. It aims to more than double its capacity, targeting 220 crore Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) by Winter 2026. Available Seat Kilometres is a key performance indicator in the aviation industry, representing the total number of seats available multiplied by the distance flown.

Industry experts note that while technical snags can occur in complex machinery like aircraft engines, modern aviation systems are designed with multiple redundancies. Twin-engine aircraft such as the Boeing 737 are capable of operating safely even if one engine experiences issues, provided all emergency procedures are followed.

Aviation safety in India has improved significantly over the years, with airlines investing heavily in maintenance infrastructure, crew training, and advanced monitoring systems. Incidents such as this, where flights return safely due to precautionary measures, demonstrate the effectiveness of established safety frameworks.

Passengers affected by the disruption are expected to be accommodated on alternate flights or offered refunds as per airline policy. SpiceJet has not yet detailed compensation measures but typically arranges rebooking options in such cases.

Any deviation from normal thresholds triggers cockpit alerts, enabling immediate corrective action.
