  • SSB apprehended 63 escapees from Nepal prisons near Kishanganj along the Indo-Nepal border.

  • Some detainees claimed Indian identity, raising concerns over cross-border crime and verification.

  • A woman inmate was handed over to police, highlighting coordination between Indian and Nepalese authorities.

In a dramatic cross-border development, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has detained 63 prison escapees from Nepal along the Bihar border, with some of the fugitives reportedly claiming to be Indian nationals. The operation took place near Kishanganj district, a sensitive stretch of the Indo-Nepal border that has long been a hotspot for cross-border crime and smuggling.

According to officials, the detainees are among those who recently escaped from multiple prisons in Nepal. The large-scale jailbreak has shaken Nepalese authorities and has also created significant security concerns for India, given the porous nature of the border.

One of the detainees, a woman inmate, was apprehended near Kishanganj and later handed over to the local police for further verification and legal action. SSB officials stated that verification of identity and nationality is underway, as a number of the escapees have claimed to be Indian citizens.

The Indo-Nepal border, running over 1,700 km, is an open border under the Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship (1950). While this allows for free movement of people between the two countries, it also poses challenges in terms of illegal migration, smuggling, and cross-border criminal activity.

Security analysts have raised concerns that the sudden influx of prison escapees could be exploited by anti-national elements or organized crime groups, making verification and handover a delicate process. Authorities have assured that due process will be followed, and those proven to be Indian nationals will be dealt with under domestic law, while foreign escapees will be coordinated with the Nepalese government for repatriation.

The mass jailbreak in Nepal, though still under investigation, is believed to have been triggered by lapses in prison security and overcrowding, with some reports suggesting possible collusion of insiders. Nepalese authorities are already under pressure to track down hundreds of missing convicts, some of whom are known to be hardened criminals.

For India, this incident highlights the importance of vigilant border management. The SSB, tasked with guarding the Indo-Nepal frontier, has been increasing its patrolling efforts, particularly in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, which are seen as vulnerable entry points for fugitives and smugglers.

The detention of 63 escapees in a single operation underscores the magnitude of the issue. Experts warn that unless swift action is taken by Nepal to plug prison security loopholes and by both countries to enhance border intelligence-sharing, such incidents could undermine regional security.

Meanwhile, the handover of detainees to local police ensures that the legal process will continue under close supervision. With both Indian and Nepalese authorities in communication, the focus will be on identification, verification, and lawful repatriation or prosecution.

The situation remains fluid, with more fugitives potentially attempting to cross into India in the coming days. Security has been heightened in Kishanganj and adjoining districts, with joint operations between local police, SSB, and intelligence agencies expected to continue.
