The Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final between India and Australia may have been a thrilling contest, but much of the build-up to the game was dominated by discussions of India's supposed undue advantage. Critics argued that since India played all their matches in Dubai, stayed in the same hotel, and didn’t have to travel, they enjoyed a home-like advantage. However, Australian captain Steve Smith firmly dismissed these claims, while India's head coach Gautam Gambhir strongly criticized those fueling the controversy.
Steve Smith Dismisses 'Unfair Advantage' Claims
After India's six-wicket victory over Australia in the semi-final, Steve Smith was asked about the ongoing narrative that the Indian team had an advantage due to the conditions in Dubai. Smith, however, refused to buy into the argument, instead choosing to focus on his team's performance.
"Yeah, look, I'm not buying into it [India having an unfair advantage]. It is what it is. India obviously played some really good cricket here," Smith said in the post-match press conference. "The surface kind of suits their style with the spinners that they've got and the seamers they have at their disposal for a wicket like that. They played well, they outplayed us, and they deserve the victory."
His comments reflected a sportsmanlike acceptance of the result rather than looking for excuses. While he acknowledged that the conditions favored India’s spin attack, he emphasized that Australia was outplayed in all three departments and needed to perform better.
Gautam Gambhir Slams 'Perpetual Cribbers' Over Dubai Controversy
While Smith took a calm approach, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir was far more aggressive in addressing the accusations. He labeled those pushing the "undue advantage" narrative as "perpetual cribbers" and called for them to "grow up."
"See, first of all, this is as neutral a venue for us as it is for any other team," Gambhir said. "We have not played here. I don’t remember when we last played here. And in fact, we didn’t plan anything like that. The plan was that if you pick two frontline spinners in the 15-man squad, then even if we played in Pakistan or anywhere, we would have picked two frontline spinners because this was a competition in the subcontinent."
Gambhir further clarified that India had not even practiced at the main Dubai Stadium. Instead, their training sessions were held at the ICC Academy, which had completely different pitch conditions.
"What undue advantage? We haven’t practiced here even for one day. We’re practicing at the ICC Academy. And the conditions there and here are 180 degrees different," Gambhir pointed out. "Some people are just perpetual cribbers, man. They’ve got to grow up."
India’s Team Selection and Conditions in Dubai
The conditions in Dubai were indeed on the slower side, favoring spin bowling, which played a role in India’s team selection strategy. India picked five spinners in their 15-man squad, anticipating that the pitches might slow down as the tournament progressed.
- India started the tournament with one specialist spinner but gradually introduced two as the conditions changed.
- Pacer Mohammed Shami acknowledged that staying in the same venue did help India understand the pitch better, but he didn’t contradict Gambhir’s claim that it wasn’t an unfair advantage.
- Australia’s struggles against spin were evident as they failed to cross the 280-290 mark, which Smith admitted was necessary to challenge India.
Final Thoughts: Was There an Unfair Advantage?
While playing all matches at the same venue can certainly help a team get accustomed to the conditions, it doesn’t guarantee success. The reality is that India played better cricket in the semi-final, and their strategy—built around spinners and effective batting in chases—was well-executed.
Steve Smith’s mature response and Gautam Gambhir’s fiery rebuttal both highlight that, at the end of the day, cricket is about performing on the field, not excuses. With India now marching into the Champions Trophy final, the focus will shift to their performance rather than off-field controversies.
