Supreme Court is reviewing NEET-UG 2024 amid allegations of paper leaks and malpractices.

The NTA admitted to the paper leak and dissemination of the question paper via WhatsApp.

The court directed the release of center and city-wise results to analyze the impact of alleged irregularities.

The Supreme Court has taken significant steps in addressing the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 medical entrance exam. The court's scrutiny follows serious allegations of paper leaks and malpractices related to the exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Allegations and Court Proceedings

The legal challenge stems from claims that the NTA, responsible for overseeing the NEET-UG exam, experienced a paper leak that involved the dissemination of the leaked question paper through WhatsApp. As a result, several students have challenged the NTA's decision to award marks for two options on a question, further complicating the situation.

On July 18, the Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwla, and Justice Manoj Misra, directed the NTA to release center-wise and city-wise results of the NEET-UG 2024 exam by July 20, 2024. This directive aimed to ensure transparency and to verify whether candidates from centers alleged to have been involved in irregularities performed better than those from other centers.

Results Analysis

The results released on Saturday indicated a complex scenario. The analysis of the results showed that candidates from certain centers, such as Oasis School in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, Hardayal Public School in Jhajjar, Haryana, and Jay Jalaram International School in Godhra, Gujarat, performed below average compared to other centers. This data was released in a drop-down menu format rather than a cumulative format, following the court's instructions.

The analysis revealed that while some centers exhibited high performance, those suspected of involvement in irregularities had lower average scores. This result aligns with the Supreme Court's objective to determine if the alleged paper leak and other irregularities impacted the overall performance of the candidates.

Statements from the Centre and NTA

In previous affidavits submitted to the apex court, both the Centre and the NTA argued against scrapping the exam, stating that it would be "counterproductive" and "seriously jeopardize" the prospects of numerous honest candidates. They emphasized that there was no substantial evidence indicating a widespread breach of confidentiality that would necessitate canceling the exam.

Impact and Ongoing Proceedings

As the hearing continues, the Supreme Court's directives and the subsequent release of detailed results are crucial in addressing the concerns raised by the allegations. With over 23.33 lakh students having taken the test across 4,750 centers in 571 cities, including 14 overseas locations, the examination's integrity is of paramount importance.

The Supreme Court's involvement underscores the gravity of the situation and its commitment to ensuring that any potential malpractices are thoroughly investigated and addressed. The outcome of this case will have significant implications for the credibility of the NEET-UG exam and the fairness of the admission process for aspiring medical students.

Conclusion

The Supreme Court's review of NEET-UG 2024 amid allegations of paper leaks and malpractices highlights the need for transparency and accountability in the examination process. The release of center and city-wise results and ongoing legal proceedings will determine the extent of the impact of these irregularities and guide future actions to maintain the integrity of the medical entrance exam.
