In a politically significant development, the Supreme Court of India will hear a Presidential reference on July 22 that seeks clarity on the powers and discretionary role of the President and State Governors. The case assumes importance amid recent conflicts between state governments and Raj Bhavans over bill assent delays, floor test calls, and withholding approvals for key legislations.

The INDIA bloc, a coalition of Opposition parties, has resolved to question the Modi government’s handling of foreign policy during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The group plans to raise issues like the Pahalgam terror attack, alleged lapses in Operation Sindoor, and former US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of mediating peace between India and Pakistan. The bloc has also accused the Centre of weakening ties with traditional allies and failing to respond to regional security threats.

Meanwhile, the Centre reiterated it is open to debate on all major Opposition issues, including the Pahalgam incident and Trump’s mediation remarks, but stressed that all discussions must adhere to Parliamentary rules and decorum.

In domestic legal developments, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking criminal proceedings against MNS leader Raj Thackeray for allegedly making inflammatory anti-Hindi remarks that could disturb communal harmony.

A new pre-election survey in Bihar found that 58% of Dalit voters believe unemployment is the top poll issue, while 27.4% expressed distrust in the Election Commission of India. The findings reflect growing disenchantment with institutional credibility among marginalised communities.

The UIDAI is preparing to launch a phased biometric Aadhaar update drive for school children, targeting better inclusion and accurate identification for welfare schemes.

On the law enforcement front, the Punjab Police claimed to have dismantled a Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terror module, responsible for grenade attacks in Patiala and Ajimgarh, allegedly controlled by handlers in foreign locations.

In financial matters, the Appellate Tribunal upheld the Enforcement Directorate’s asset attachment in the Chanda Kochhar case, ruling there is a prima facie case under PMLA involving the former ICICI Bank CEO.

From the international scene, Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli is set to visit India in mid-September, expected to address bilateral issues such as connectivity, water-sharing, and border friction.

Japan’s ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba lost its majority in the Upper House during recent elections, which may impact the country’s legislative agenda.

Also, a ferry accident in Indonesia’s Sulawesi island killed at least 5 people, though 280+ passengers were safely rescued in an ongoing emergency operation.

In sports, Indian cricketer Nitish Kumar Reddy might miss the remainder of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after suffering a knee injury during training, putting pressure on the team’s middle order.
