Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra cabinets commemorate Devi Ahilyabai Holkar’s 300th birth anniversary with public welfare plans and events.
The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday commenced hearings on petitions challenging key provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act. A bench led by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih will consider interim directions on issues such as the power to denotify waqf properties declared by courts, the composition of state waqf boards and the Central Waqf Council, and the classification of waqf properties following government land inquiries.
The petitioners argue that only Muslims, excluding ex-officio members, should operate these boards. They also question a provision allowing waqf properties to lose their status during a collector’s inquiry into government land claims. The Central Government opposed interim reliefs that would prevent denotification and allow non-Muslims’ inclusion in waqf councils.
Simultaneously, the Congress party launched the ‘Jai Hind Sabhas’, a series of nationwide meetings across 15 states running through May 30. These gatherings, involving army veterans, party leaders, and the public, aim to honour the armed forces while raising critical questions about alleged security lapses and the government’s silence on the United States’ role in India-Pakistan hostilities.
Congress general secretary and organisation in-charge K C Venugopal stated on social media that the sabhas will scrutinise the government’s national security policies and challenge the BJP’s politicisation of Operation Sindoor, accusing it of using the military action for branding.
The ‘Jai Hind Sabhas’ will take place in major cities including Delhi, Barmer, Shimla, Patna, Pune, Bengaluru, Guwahati, Kolkata, and Hyderabad.
In Karnataka, the Congress government is preparing to mark its two-year tenure with a grand event at Hosapete, Vijayanagara district. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that around three lakh people are expected, with prominent leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar in attendance.
Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh cabinet will convene at the historic Rajwada Palace in Indore on Tuesday to conclude the 300th birth anniversary celebrations of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, the famed 18th-century queen known for her exemplary governance, philanthropy, and devotion. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav indicated that important public welfare decisions are on the agenda.
Ahilyabai Holkar ruled the Malwa region from 1767 to 1795 and is revered across communities in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Recently, the Maharashtra Cabinet also held a meeting at Ahilyabai’s birthplace in Ahilyanagar district to honour her legacy. The present Holkar family belongs to the Dhangar community, which holds significant presence in both states.
