A suspicious gas cylinder was found on a railway track used for army train movements in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, averting a potential accident.
Railway officials acted swiftly to remove the cylinder, and a probe has been ordered to investigate the incident further.
This case is part of a series of recent incidents where objects were placed on tracks, raising concerns about railway safety across India.
In a concerning incident in Uttarakhand's Roorkee, a suspicious gas cylinder was found placed on a railway track used primarily for army train movements on Saturday, October 12. This incident, which took place near the Dhandhera railway station, raised alarms due to the strategic importance of the area, as the track is regularly used for transporting army vehicles and soldiers.
The placement of the gas cylinder on the track was detected by a goods train driver, who promptly applied emergency brakes to avoid any potential accident. The driver’s quick thinking averted a possible railway disaster, as the presence of the cylinder could have resulted in severe consequences for the train and its cargo.
The Response
Upon being informed, railway officials quickly reached the scene and removed the gas cylinder from the track. Given the proximity to the Bengal Engineer Group & Centre, which operates out of Roorkee, the incident took on additional significance. This railway track plays a critical role in army logistics, making the event even more concerning for authorities.
A thorough investigation has been initiated, with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and other relevant departments conducting an extensive search of the surrounding area, covering nearly five kilometers of track. However, initial searches have failed to uncover any clues regarding the individuals responsible for placing the cylinder on the railway track. As a precautionary measure, an FIR has been filed, and the case has been handed over to local police for further investigation.
Pattern of Suspicious Objects
This incident is not an isolated event. It forms part of a disturbing pattern where suspicious objects have been placed on railway tracks in an attempt to derail trains. Just a few weeks earlier, similar cases were reported in Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh, and Surat, Gujarat, where fish plates, keys, and even gas cylinders were found on railway tracks. These objects were strategically placed in an attempt to cause train derailments, endangering lives and property.
For instance, in Kanpur Dehat on September 22, a goods train driver managed to avert disaster by noticing a small gas cylinder placed on the railway track near Maharajpur's Prempur station. The driver acted quickly by applying the brakes, which prevented a possible derailment. Similarly, in Gujarat’s Surat, fish plates and railway keys were found on the tracks, which could have led to a significant accident had they not been removed in time.
Rail Safety Concerns
These repeated incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of railway operations across India, especially in areas where military movements are frequent. With multiple suspicious objects being discovered on tracks in different states, railway authorities have heightened their vigilance. Security measures have been reinforced, and special attention is being given to high-priority routes, such as those used by goods trains and army trains.
The swift actions taken by train drivers in all these cases have prevented major accidents, showcasing the dedication and alertness of the railway staff. However, these incidents highlight the need for enhanced security along railway routes and a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of train passengers and railway personnel.
Ongoing Investigation
As the investigation into the Roorkee gas cylinder case continues, authorities are hoping to find more conclusive evidence regarding the individuals responsible for the act. Given the proximity to military infrastructure, authorities are treating this case with the utmost seriousness, examining whether it could be part of a larger sabotage attempt or an isolated incident.
Railway officials and local police are now coordinating their efforts to ensure all necessary precautions are taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Meanwhile, the public is being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity near railway tracks to authorities.
The safety and security of India's vast railway network are critical to the nation’s infrastructure, and any threat to this network is treated as a significant concern. In response to these recent incidents, railway safety patrols have been increased, and special teams are being deployed to monitor vulnerable sections of railway lines.
