In a critical geopolitical development, the Sixth Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue took place in Kabul on August 20, 2025, involving Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan. The meeting highlighted a sharp divergence between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban over handling the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Top Taliban officials informed China that they cannot exercise full control over the TTP and described the issue as Pakistan’s internal matter. They emphasized facilitating dialogue between Islamabad and the TTP rather than pursuing a forceful crackdown.
During the summit, Pakistan demanded stringent action against both the TTP and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), accusing the Taliban of supporting these groups. Kabul denied any TTP support but pledged cooperation on countering BLA hideouts and infiltration, reflecting a nuanced approach to regional security.
The BLA emerged as a common concern, targeting both Pakistani and Chinese interests, particularly along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The trilateral deliberations underscored coordinated strategies to tackle terrorism while maintaining regional stability. China played a mediatory role, promoting dialogue and joint action.
The meeting also focused on regional connectivity, trade, and economic cooperation. China proposed extending CPEC into Afghanistan, ensuring smoother access to Central Asia via Kandahar and Kabul. Beijing also indicated investment plans in Afghanistan’s mineral sector and sought to integrate the Taliban government into the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) framework.
The trilateral agreement included establishing a joint mechanism for cooperation, covering regional connectivity, counter-terrorism, education, health, trade, drug trafficking prevention, and advancing CPEC projects into Afghan territory. Afghanistan sought international recognition of its legitimate position and called for enhanced collaboration across security, trade, and diplomatic fronts.
The summit was attended by Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and Afghan Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, and reinforced China’s strategic support for the Taliban-led administration, underscoring Beijing’s broader regional engagement goals. The meeting reflects ongoing efforts to balance regional security, economic growth, and diplomatic collaboration amid complex South Asian dynamics.
