Tamil Nadu BJP president claims some DMK allies want to join AIADMK-led NDA citing dissatisfaction with current alliance

Nagenthiran terms DMK’s coalition as fragile and predicts an NDA government in Tamil Nadu after the next Assembly election

BJP chief also raised issues like Keeladi recognition, RTE fund delays, and highlighted Centre’s ₹10 lakh crore support to the state
Tamil Nadu BJP State president Nainar Nagenthiran has made a politically significant claim stating that some of the alliance partners of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) are in contact with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and are eager to switch sides to the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state.
In a media interaction held on Wednesday, Mr. Nagenthiran said, “Talks are going on with a few political parties who are currently part of the DMK alliance. Some of these parties will come to the NDA fold.”
While he refrained from naming the political outfits involved in such discussions, he asserted that the chances of them shifting allegiance were bright, hinting at growing discontent within the DMK’s coalition.
DMK Alliance Termed ‘Fragile’
Calling the DMK’s alliance as “fragile”, Mr. Nagenthiran challenged the ruling party’s strength by saying,
“If the DMK is really strong as projected, let the party contest the upcoming Assembly elections alone.”
He further added, “Since the NDA in Tamil Nadu is strong, our alliance partner AIADMK-led rule will be in place in the State after the next Assembly polls.”
The statement is being seen as a direct challenge to the DMK's political consolidation, coming at a time when Tamil Nadu's political alignments could witness shifts ahead of the next legislative elections.
Centre’s Fund Allocation to Tamil Nadu
Highlighting the BJP-led Centre’s support to Tamil Nadu over the years, Mr. Nagenthiran said that the Union Government has given more than ₹10 lakh crore to the State in the past 11 years, excluding GST shares.
However, when asked to provide a detailed breakup of the Centre-funded projects in Tamil Nadu, the BJP chief responded,
“I’ll give you the details later.”
This response drew criticism from reporters, who sought greater transparency regarding the Union Government’s investment in the State.
BJP’s Stand on Keeladi Excavations
Addressing questions related to Keeladi, the ancient archaeological site of Tamil civilisation, Mr. Nagenthiran said he would soon visit the site and then recommend measures to the Centre.
When questioned about the Centre’s reluctance to officially recognise findings from recent carbon dating studies conducted by a U.S. university, the BJP chief asserted:
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP are holding Tamil and Tamils in high esteem by propagating its ancientness and culture across the globe.”
This is in line with the BJP's broader strategy to connect with Tamil cultural heritage, especially as it aims to widen its appeal in southern India.
Attack on Tamil Nadu Government Over RTE Funds
Mr. Nagenthiran also criticised the DMK government for not utilising the Right to Education (RTE) funds effectively. He questioned Chief Minister M. K. Stalin's intent, asking:
“If Stalin claims the State is managing its fiscal gaps with its own resources, why is he waiting for the Centre to release RTE funds for poor rural students?”
The BJP leader’s comments came in response to the Madras High Court’s direction to the Union Government to release RTE funds. His remarks are seen as part of the ongoing political confrontation between the BJP and the DMK-led state government.
National Achievements Highlighted
The BJP president used the opportunity to list the Modi Government’s achievements over the past 11 years. He said that the BJP-led Union Government has given top priority to national security, while also developing social, agricultural, and health infrastructure.
He reinforced that the Central Government's development approach has been inclusive, with significant investments made across India, including Tamil Nadu.
Political Significance
The claim that some DMK allies are in talks with the BJP is politically charged and could impact electoral strategies in the coming months.
While there is no official confirmation from any DMK alliance partner, such claims may create friction within the ruling coalition and reignite political realignments before the next assembly elections.
This move seems to be part of BJP’s larger strategy to gain ground in Tamil Nadu, a state where it has been working to establish a significant foothold alongside AIADMK
