In a shocking development, Kerala police arrested a 52-year-old man from Tamil Nadu, identified as Surendran Muthaiya, for illegally possessing a large cache of explosives. The police recovered 75 electric detonators and 20 meters of related materials from a rented house in Kottayam’s Kappukad, Vazhoor.
The Arrest and Police Investigation
The arrest was made after the Idukki Vandanmedu Police detained two individuals, Shibili from Erattupetta and Faizi from Thekkoy, on suspicion of smuggling explosives. During questioning, the two suspects revealed details about Surendran Muthaiya, leading the police to track him down.
Acting on this intelligence, the Kottayam District Police Chief, Shahul Hameed, coordinated a raid with officers from Pallikkathodu police station. The operation led to the seizure of explosive materials and the immediate arrest of Muthaiya from his rented residence in Kappukad.
Possible Links to Larger Smuggling Operations
Authorities are now investigating whether Muthaiya and the other arrested individuals are part of a larger network engaged in the illegal transportation and sale of explosives. The presence of electric detonators suggests potential use in quarrying, illegal mining, or more concerning activities.
Kerala police are also looking into cross-border smuggling routes and whether these explosives were meant for any unauthorized operations in Tamil Nadu or Kerala. Further arrests and interrogations are expected as the investigation unfolds.
Police and Security Concerns
The incident has raised serious concerns regarding the illegal movement of explosives across state borders. Authorities are tightening security and monitoring potential suppliers of explosive materials.
With state and national security at stake, police officials have assured that strict action will be taken against those involved in illicit explosive smuggling. The case is still under active investigation, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
