  • Collaboration with APDCL to expand rooftop solar under the PMSGY scheme.
  • Initiative to generate 3000 jobs and accelerate Assam’s clean energy transition.

Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has taken a significant step toward renewable energy expansion by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Assam Government at the Advantage Assam 2.0 event. This agreement aims to develop and support 5000 MW of renewable and clean energy projects in the state, including solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage, with an investment of ₹30,000 crore over the next five years.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Krishna Kumar Dwivedi, Principal Secretary Power, Government of Assam, and Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power, in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with other senior officials. This collaboration is expected to accelerate Assam’s clean energy transition and align with India’s ambitious target of 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Strategic Land Allocation for Renewable Energy Projects

The Assam Government has committed to identifying and allocating approximately 20,000 acres of encumbrance-free government land on a lease basis. Additionally, support will be provided in acquiring private land suitable for solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage projects. The government will also focus on infrastructure development to ensure seamless transmission connectivity and promote the establishment of Renewable Energy Parks through state agencies.

Focus on Industrial & Group Captive Power Solutions

To enhance the adoption of clean energy, the government will facilitate the development of Group Captive sites, allowing industries and tea gardens to access green power under Assam’s land allotment and industrial policies. The single-window clearance system will be implemented for statutory approvals, along with financial incentives and collaboration with research institutions for innovation in the renewable energy sector.

Employment Generation & Skill Development

This initiative will contribute to employment generation by creating 3000 direct jobs for the local youth. Furthermore, the state will introduce skill development programs to train and equip workers for project implementation and operational management, ensuring a sustainable and skilled workforce for Assam’s growing renewable energy sector.

Tata Power’s Commitment to Assam’s Clean Energy Goals

With Assam harnessing its rich natural resources, the state holds a renewable energy potential of 14,487 MW, led by solar energy. The state government has set a goal of achieving 500 MW of solar capacity by 2027. Tata Power’s collaboration with Assam aims to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and support the state’s vision of clean energy transition.

In addition to the 5000 MW renewable energy projects, Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has signed a second MoU with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL). This partnership will focus on expanding rooftop solar adoption under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY). This initiative aims to boost energy efficiency, increase the use of solar power, and encourage sustainable electricity solutions across the state.

CEO’s Vision for a Greener Future

Commenting on the collaboration, Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, stated:

"These MoUs mark significant steps towards developing renewable and clean energy capacity, leveraging Assam’s vast potential in solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage. With strong policy support, infrastructure development, and skill enhancement initiatives, this collaboration will not only strengthen the state’s energy security but also drive economic growth and job creation. Tata Power remains committed to delivering sustainable energy solutions that align with Assam Government’s vision for a greener future and India’s ambitious target of 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030."

Tata Power has already established a strong presence in Assam’s renewable energy sector. Some of the key contributions include:

  • 20 MW of rooftop solar capacity installed across the state.
  • More than 300 home EV chargers, encouraging electric mobility adoption.
  • Over 20 public EV charging stations, supporting Assam’s shift to green transportation.
