What's Covered:

TCS collaborates with Tata Electronics for India's first domestically manufactured semiconductor chips by 2026.

Tata Electronics leads a US$ 11 billion chip plant in Gujarat and a US$ 3.26 billion assembly facility in Assam.

The partnership supports India’s growing semiconductor sector with expertise in design and manufacturing.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has partnered with Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd to support India’s ambition of producing its first domestically manufactured semiconductor chips by 2026. This collaboration is a significant milestone in the country’s semiconductor initiative, positioning India to play a pivotal role in the global tech ecosystem. According to Mr. Sreenivasa Chakravarti, TCS’s Vice-President, the company is deeply involved in various aspects of semiconductor design and engineering, while Tata Electronics spearheads the efforts to develop chip manufacturing capabilities.

India, which has long relied on imports for semiconductor chips, is now focusing on building its own chip manufacturing infrastructure. The collaboration between TCS and Tata Electronics is critical for achieving this goal, bringing together expertise in design and manufacturing to create a comprehensive solution for the semiconductor industry. TCS will also provide software solutions and intellectual property (IP)-based products, contributing to the growth of India's semiconductor sector.

Tata Electronics is leading two key projects aimed at building India’s chip manufacturing capacity. One of the major projects is an US$ 11 billion chip manufacturing plant in Dholera, Gujarat, in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor (PSMC). This state-of-the-art facility will have an initial capacity of 50,000 wafers per month, which is expected to significantly boost India's domestic semiconductor production. In addition to the Dholera project, Tata Electronics is also working on a US$ 3.26 billion chip assembly and testing facility in Assam, which is expected to start delivering chips by late 2025 or early 2026. Together, these initiatives mark a significant step forward for India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

While TCS has already built a strong reputation for its expertise in semiconductor design and software development, it has not yet ventured into chip manufacturing. This sets the collaboration apart from other players like HCL Technologies, which recently announced a joint venture with Foxconn for a chip testing facility. However, by combining its software expertise with Tata Electronics’ manufacturing capabilities, TCS aims to close the gap between design and manufacturing in India's semiconductor sector.

The semiconductor industry is the backbone of modern technology, powering everything from smartphones and computers to automobiles and healthcare devices. The global semiconductor shortage, caused by disruptions in the supply chain, has highlighted the need for countries to develop their own semiconductor manufacturing ecosystems. India’s semiconductor initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce its dependence on imported chips and become a global leader in chip production.

The Dholera plant, once operational, will be the largest of its kind in India, with cutting-edge technology and partnerships with global players like Powerchip Semiconductor. This plant will be capable of producing 50,000 wafers per month, placing India on the map as a competitive player in the global semiconductor market. The Assam assembly and testing facility will further enhance India’s ability to produce high-quality chips that meet international standards. This facility will not only serve India’s growing domestic demand but also cater to global markets, helping to establish India as a hub for semiconductor manufacturing.

India’s semiconductor sector has long been hampered by the lack of a complete ecosystem that includes chip design, fabrication, and assembly. However, with TCS and Tata Electronics working together, the country is poised to overcome these challenges and emerge as a key player in the global semiconductor industry. This collaboration also reflects India’s broader goals of becoming self-reliant in critical sectors like technology and manufacturing.

The involvement of TCS in the semiconductor design and software development process is crucial for the success of India’s semiconductor initiative. TCS’s extensive expertise in engineering and IP-based solutions ensures that the chips developed through this partnership will be of the highest quality, meeting the rigorous demands of global consumers and businesses. Moreover, the collaboration will create a ripple effect across the Indian economy, providing new job opportunities, fostering innovation, and driving technological advancement.

By focusing on both design and manufacturing, TCS and Tata Electronics are setting the stage for India to become a global leader in semiconductor production. This partnership is expected to accelerate India’s technological capabilities, positioning the country as a critical player in the global supply chain.

As India moves closer to achieving its goal of producing domestically manufactured chips, it will be able to reduce its dependence on imports and strengthen its position in the global semiconductor market. This will not only boost India’s economy but also enhance the country’s national security, as access to reliable and high-quality semiconductors is essential for modern defense and communication systems.
