TDP Marks One Year of Rule as YSRCP Observes 'Betrayal Day' in Andhra Pradesh
On June 4, Andhra Pradesh witnessed contrasting political narratives, as the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu celebrated the first anniversary of its 2024 election victory, while the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) staged state-wide protests labelling the day as ‘Betrayal Day’.
This sharp divide underscores the deepening political rivalry in the state, one year after the TDP-Janasena-BJP alliance swept to power in a landslide victory, dramatically reducing the YSRCP's influence in the Assembly.
June 4 Declared ‘Praja Teerpu Dinam’ by CM Naidu
Chandrababu Naidu announced that June 4 will be observed annually as ‘Praja Teerpu Dinam’ (People’s Verdict Day) to mark the historic 2024 electoral win, calling it the moment democracy was restored in Andhra Pradesh.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he declared:
“This day marks the end of oppressive rule and the return of democratic governance. It is the day when the people swept away the dictatorship... when every citizen began to enjoy freedom and peace.”
Naidu’s comments were a veiled reference to the YSRCP’s governance style, which he and his allies had frequently termed ‘psycho rule’ during the campaign.
The 2024 elections had seen the TDP-Janasena-BJP combine win 164 out of 175 Assembly seats, relegating the YSRCP to just 11 seats—a dramatic reversal from 2019, when YSRCP had enjoyed a massive majority.
Nara Lokesh Praises the People’s Mandate
IT and Rural Development Minister Nara Lokesh, son of CM Naidu, also took to social media to express gratitude.
“June 4 is the day people’s hopes defeated destructive rule,” he wrote, reaffirming his commitment to development, youth empowerment, and women welfare.
TDP leaders across the state held celebratory rallies, party meetings, and press conferences, highlighting what they said were achievements in governance, transparency, and economic revival in the last year.
YSRCP Observes 'Betrayal Day' with State-wide Protests
In stark contrast, YSRCP observed the same day as 'Betrayal Day', alleging that the Naidu government had failed to deliver on the major promises made during the 2024 election campaign.
Party leaders and supporters held black flag protests across major towns and cities including Tirupati, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Anantapur, and Kurnool. Protesters carried placards and banners accusing the government of deception.
One placard in Tirupati read:
“Babu definitely cheated.”
YSRCP MLA and spokesperson Ambati Rambabu stated:
“It has been a year, and the government has not fulfilled a single 'Super Six' promise. Women, youth, farmers, and the poor have all been betrayed.”
The ‘Super Six’ Promises in Question
YSRCP protests focused on the so-called 'Super Six' promises made by the TDP-led alliance in the run-up to the 2024 elections. These included:
-
Monthly financial assistance to women under a welfare scheme.
-
Job creation for youth across the state.
-
Free bus travel for women in public transportation.
-
Increased pensions for senior citizens and differently abled persons.
-
Loan waivers for farmers and agriculture revival.
-
Housing for the poor and rapid completion of pending schemes.
According to YSRCP, none of these promises have been fulfilled even after one year in office. They accused the government of spending more time on symbolism and vendetta politics than actual governance.
Government Response to the Allegations
The TDP, in its official response, dismissed the protests as “frustrated theatrics” by a party that had been rejected by the people in a decisive mandate.
Minister for Finance and Legislative Affairs, P. Keshav, stated:
“We are rolling out welfare in phases, responsibly. YSRCP ruined state finances, and we’re working to stabilise the economy first before delivering big-ticket schemes.”
He added that the new government had already taken major steps including:
-
Audit of corruption allegations against previous YSRCP leaders.
-
Revival of Amaravati as the capital, promising planned infrastructure.
-
Clearing dues for pending welfare schemes left by the previous government.
Political Significance of the Day
June 4 is now emerging as a politically symbolic day in Andhra Pradesh’s contemporary history. For TDP and its allies, it represents a democratic rebirth and a people’s mandate for good governance. For the YSRCP, it is a reminder of broken promises and political betrayal.
Political observers say both narratives reflect the ongoing ideological and developmental tug-of-war between the two dominant political forces in the state.
Looking Ahead: 2029 and Beyond
As Andhra Pradesh continues to recover from fiscal stress, post-pandemic challenges, and infrastructure delays, the Naidu government will face intensified scrutiny in the run-up to the next general elections in 2029.
With the opposition actively mobilising and leveraging street-level protests, the next few years will likely see increased political polarisation, grassroots activism, and debates over developmental equity, welfare efficiency, and transparency.
Meanwhile, the public remains the ultimate judge of who holds the true mandate of trust—‘Praja Teerpu’ or ‘Betrayal Day’ may well continue to define Andhra Pradesh’s political calendar in years to come
