New Delhi/Beijing, July 17, 2025:
Chinese smartphone brand Tecno has taken the next big leap in foldable phone innovation by unveiling its Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept, a tri-fold smartphone that expands to a massive 9.94-inch display. The futuristic foldable will be officially showcased at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, as the company aims to establish itself as a pioneer in next-generation foldable devices.
The new concept follows Tecno’s 2024 launch of the Phantom Ultimate 2, a similar tri-fold prototype that generated significant buzz at MWC 2025. With the G Fold Concept, the company promises even more refined engineering, practical design upgrades, and flagship-grade specifications.
Innovative G-Style Tri-Fold Design
Tecno's Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept features a G-Style tri-fold architecture, combining both inward and outward folding layers to provide maximum display area while ensuring screen protection.
The phone transitions from a compact form to an unfolded 9.94-inch tablet-style screen, offering unmatched real estate for multitasking, gaming, video editing, and productivity.
When folded, the device measures 11.49mm in thickness, while the unfolded thinnest section is just 3.49mm, making it one of the slimmest foldables in the concept stage.
“Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept showcases an innovative G-Style design. Its expansive inner display folds inward twice, completely shielding the main screen from scratches and impacts when not in use,” Tecno said in a press statement.
Dual-Hinge System for Smooth Folding
The smartphone employs a custom-engineered dual-hinge mechanism:
-
A smaller waterdrop hinge enables the right section of the screen to fold inward in a book-like motion.
-
A larger primary hinge folds the remaining left section over the top, completing the G-shaped folding pattern.
This structure ensures that the device remains compact, mechanically durable, and user-friendly, even in long-term daily usage scenarios.
Tecno has developed the hinge with enhanced wear resistance, reduced mechanical stress, and a focus on hinge lifespan, although specific durability numbers haven’t been revealed yet.
Customised Dual-Cam Hinge and Hovering Mode
A unique innovation in the G Fold Concept is its customised dual-camera design within the large hinge. This setup supports multi-angle hovering, letting users:
-
Partially unfold the device like a laptop or kickstand,
-
Take hands-free photos or video calls,
-
Operate split-screen apps effectively, or
-
Use half-display gaming modes.
This flexible interaction design gives the phone added versatility, aiming to appeal to both content creators and power users.
Flagship-Level Specs: Triple Camera & Big Battery
Tecno has confirmed that the Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept will include a triple rear camera system, although full camera specifications are expected closer to its MWC 2026 showcase.
The phone will also feature an over 5,000 mAh battery, a major feat considering its ultra-thin form. Battery optimisations are likely to include:
-
AI-assisted power management,
-
Adaptive refresh rates, and
-
Quick charging capabilities, although Tecno hasn’t confirmed exact figures yet.
If these battery claims hold in final builds, it could put the G Fold Concept on par with premium smartphones despite the space constraints of a tri-fold design.
MWC 2026: Tecno’s Big Play on Global Tech Stage
Tecno’s decision to unveil the Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept ahead of MWC 2026 signals its serious push into the global foldable market. Traditionally known for mid-range innovation in Africa and South Asia, the company now seems ready to compete with giants like Huawei, Samsung, and Xiaomi in the premium experimental tech space.
Industry insiders expect Tecno to use MWC 2026 to showcase:
-
Prototype demos,
-
Hands-on previews,
-
Possibly even developer SDKs to test multi-screen functionalities.
The company’s earlier tri-fold prototype, Phantom Ultimate 2, won design awards for its innovation but never made it to mass production. Whether the G Fold Concept does better depends on market readiness, hinge durability, and component supply chains, experts say.
Foldables Market Heating Up
Tecno’s move comes as several tech giants including Samsung, Oppo, Huawei, and Honor are racing to dominate the next generation of multi-fold smartphones. Samsung is already expected to unveil a dual-folding Galaxy Z Tri-Fold in early 2026.
However, Tecno’s approach—focusing on cost-effective innovation and multi-angle user scenarios—could give it an edge in emerging markets, provided the final product stays affordable and practical.
According to global research firm Counterpoint, foldable phone shipments could cross 50 million units by 2026, and companies that offer unique use cases—like content creation and hybrid work—are expected to benefit the most.
Conclusion: A Bold Leap for Tecno
The Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept positions Tecno as a serious innovator in the world of foldable phones. With ambitious design, premium features, and a clear focus on flexibility, Tecno could be gearing up to make one of the most talked-about launches at MWC 2026.
While it's still a concept device, industry observers are watching closely to see if Tecno can bridge the gap between design innovation and real-world usability—something that many foldable phones still struggle to balance.
