Yadav blames 20 years of NDA rule for growing joblessness, poverty and ignoring real concerns of Bihar's people during Modi's two-day tour
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of ignoring the most pressing issues plaguing Bihar during his recent two-day visit to the State. The former Deputy Chief Minister, currently in Kolkata to be with his wife after the birth of their second child, took to social media to express his dissatisfaction with what he called the Prime Minister's calculated silence.
In his post, Tejashwi Yadav criticised Modi for not speaking on topics that directly affect the people of Bihar, especially the controversies surrounding Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s health. Nitish Kumar, who leads the JD(U), a key BJP ally in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has recently come under scrutiny for his alleged physical and mental unfitness, owing to awkward public appearances and behaviour that has sparked widespread concern.
Yadav pointed out that despite Bihar being a crucial political battleground, Modi failed to address or even acknowledge the issue of Nitish Kumar’s fitness, leaving the public with more questions than answers. He argued that the Prime Minister chose to remain completely silent, a fact he highlighted by posting a photo of Modi wearing a mask, with a caption suggesting he did not open his mouth on any real issues.
Beyond the Chief Minister’s health, Tejashwi Yadav raised several other unresolved issues that he believes have been persistently ignored by the BJP-led central government. These include the long-standing demand for special status for Bihar, the alarming levels of unemployment, the crumbling healthcare infrastructure, worsening law and order conditions, and the exodus of youth due to lack of local opportunities.
Yadav also called into question the announcements made by Modi during the visit, particularly the claimed launch of projects worth over ₹50,000 crore. According to Yadav, most of these were rehashed schemes or foundation stones for works originally announced in 2015. He alleged that the event was more about optics and headlines than actual new development, accusing the BJP of misleading the public for electoral gains.
The RJD leader did not hold back in his assessment of two decades of NDA governance, stating that it had led to record-breaking levels of joblessness, poverty, and migration. He painted a grim picture of Bihar under the BJP-JD(U) alliance, arguing that the people of the state have not seen meaningful progress despite repeated promises and flashy project announcements.
In particular, the issue of special status remains a critical demand from Bihar’s political and civil society circles, as it is seen as essential for getting more central assistance to uplift the state's economic situation. Yadav noted that Modi’s failure to even mention this issue during his visit shows a lack of genuine concern for Bihar’s developmental needs.
On the matter of employment, Tejashwi cited recent data and ground realities to assert that young people in Bihar are still being forced to migrate to other states in search of basic job opportunities. He also linked this migration to the poor state of education and health facilities, blaming successive NDA governments for creating a cycle of deprivation.
Law and order, another area Yadav feels has been neglected, continues to be a concern in many districts. Rising cases of crime, slow judicial processes, and the lack of effective policing infrastructure have added to the woes of citizens. Yet, according to Yadav, none of these issues were addressed by Modi, who instead focused on inauguration ceremonies and symbolic events.
This latest criticism comes at a time when Bihar’s political landscape is heating up, with elections and national-level alignments playing a significant role in shaping narratives. Yadav, a prominent leader of the opposition INDIA bloc, has been steadily positioning himself as a voice for Bihar’s marginalised and youth population, often taking direct shots at both Nitish Kumar and the BJP.
His comments also reflect a growing frustration among opposition leaders about what they perceive as tokenistic gestures by the central government. They argue that Bihar, with its large population, historical significance, and unique challenges, deserves more than lip service and repackaged projects.
In conclusion, Tejashwi Yadav’s pointed remarks underline a deep dissatisfaction with the current approach to governance in Bihar. His statements have further fuelled the debate over the NDA’s performance in the state and raised questions about how seriously the concerns of common citizens are being taken by the top leadership.
As the nation gears up for future electoral contests, and Bihar continues to demand more focused and inclusive development, such criticisms are expected to become a central theme of political discourse in the state. Whether the central leadership responds with concrete action or continues to rely on grand project announcements, remains to be seen.
