BJP MP Tejasvi Surya criticises Bilawal Bhutto’s peace claims, calls Pakistan’s record on terrorism hypocritical at the Indian Embassy in Washington.

The Indian delegation to the US led by Shashi Tharoor rebuts Pakistan’s claims on Operation Sindoor and underscores India’s counterterrorism stance.
In a bold and unsparing diplomatic rebuttal, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Tejasvi Surya launched a fiery critique of Pakistan’s delegation to the United Nations, led by former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, dismissing Islamabad’s peace narrative as hollow and hypocritical. Speaking at a high-level event at the Indian Embassy in Washington, Surya drew a stark contrast between the global contributions of Indian tech icons and Pakistan-linked terrorists, turning the spotlight on Pakistan’s credibility crisis at international forums.
This confrontation comes against the backdrop of India’s all-party parliamentary delegation’s visit to the United States, aimed at strengthening India’s diplomatic posture following Operation Sindoor, a high-precision counter-terror operation in Jammu & Kashmir after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025.
"The Devil Quoting Scripture": Surya Targets Pakistan’s Peace Narrative
In a searing address, Tejasvi Surya described the Pakistani delegation’s call for peace as “the Devil quoting from the scriptures,” mocking the irony of Islamabad, long accused of harbouring terrorists, presenting itself as a messenger of peace. He ridiculed Pakistan’s attempts to manufacture glory through military figures:
“It is quite ironic that the Pakistani delegation is speaking the language of peace. For a country that is trying to create fake heroes by promoting failed generals to field marshal, they don’t know what true leaders look like.”
Surya’s remarks were aimed squarely at Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who had called India’s Operation Sindoor “illegal” in his speech at the UN Headquarters. Surya countered by exposing Pakistan’s continued history of exporting terror while India, he argued, exports innovation and leadership.
“Ramzi Yousef or Sundar Pichai — Choose Your Legacy”
The BJP youth leader took the debate beyond the rhetoric by offering a symbolic contrast between India and Pakistan. Naming Ramzi Yousef, the 1993 World Trade Center bomber, and David Headley, the 26/11 Mumbai attack conspirator, Surya said these names represented Pakistan’s global legacy. He then juxtaposed them with India’s contributions:
“Ramzi Yousef, the 1993 World Trade Centre bomber. David Coleman Headley, conspirator of 26/11. That’s Pakistan’s record. And now five Indian names — Indra Nooyi, Sundar Pichai, Ajay Bagga, Satya Nadella, Kash Patel. I don’t have to introduce them. This is the difference.”
The powerful metaphor underscored India’s soft power dominance in global platforms — from the Silicon Valley boardrooms to leadership in multinational corporations — compared to Pakistan’s notoriety in global counter-terrorism reports.
Sharp Attack on China-Pakistan Military Ties
Tejasvi Surya didn’t stop at terror. He launched a direct attack on Pakistan’s military dependency on China, suggesting that its over-reliance on Chinese military hardware and economic handouts had reduced Pakistan to a satellite state:
“Pakistan has been surviving on cheap Chinese imports, including military hardware, which spectacularly failed on the battlefield. So perhaps it is hard for them to digest high-quality, high-calibre military hardware as well as strong democratic leadership on the other side of the border.”
Surya’s comments reflect India’s growing geopolitical alignment with Western democracies while Pakistan remains caught in strategic dependence on China, both militarily and economically.
Indian Delegation Rebuffs Bilawal’s Claims on Operation Sindoor
The delegation visit, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, has gained significance after Operation Sindoor, India’s precision strikes targeting terror camps in Pakistan-occupied territories. Bilawal Bhutto’s description of these strikes as “illegal” was flatly rejected by the Indian delegation.
Surya, alongside other parliamentarians, defended India’s actions, stating that the strikes were carried out in self-defence after Pakistani-backed militants killed Indian soldiers and civilians in Pahalgam.
The multi-party delegation is part of India’s outreach to explain the legality and necessity of Operation Sindoor to US lawmakers, media, and civil society.
Members of the Indian Delegation
Apart from Shashi Tharoor and Tejasvi Surya, the all-party delegation includes:
-
Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party)
-
Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha)
-
G M Harish Balayogi (Telugu Desam Party)
-
Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP)
-
Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP)
-
Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena)
-
Milind Deora (Shiv Sena – Shinde faction)
-
Taranjit Singh Sandhu, former Indian Ambassador to the US
The delegation has held multiple briefings with US officials and think tanks to reaffirm India’s zero-tolerance policy on terrorism and advocate for a rules-based global order.
Shashi Tharoor’s Parallel Diplomacy and Metaphor-Driven Messaging
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, known for his diplomatic finesse, also countered Pakistan’s victim narrative, arguing that talks are impossible until terrorism is fully dismantled. His metaphor — comparing Pakistan’s terrorist networks to “Rottweilers let loose on your children” — echoed in Washington circles, drawing both criticism and praise for its bluntness.
Tharoor, though from a rival political party, supported the Modi government’s security stance, showing rare bipartisan alignment on India’s national interest.
Pakistan’s Global Narrative Weakens Further
The contrast drawn by Surya and supported by the rest of the delegation comes at a time when Pakistan faces increasing international scrutiny, with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) retaining the country on its grey list for lax counter-terror compliance. With economic instability, growing dependence on IMF bailouts, and diplomatic isolation, Pakistan’s credibility continues to erode.
Bhutto’s efforts to position Pakistan as a responsible actor were seen by Indian officials as public relations theatrics with little substance. India's messaging, instead, is focused on showcasing its technological innovation, democratic values, and firm counterterrorism resolve.
Conclusion: The Power of Global Perception
Tejasvi Surya’s speech wasn’t just political rhetoric — it was a carefully calibrated image battle. By comparing terror convicts with tech CEOs, he weaponised global perception in India’s favour. In today’s geopolitics, where soft power and global trust matter as much as military strength, Surya’s words reflect how India wants to define its international identity.
India is clearly positioning itself as a nation of progress and peace, while continuing to expose Pakistan’s duplicity on the global stage. The US visit, backed by a unified delegation and strategically timed post-Operation Sindoor, could help cement this narrative further — provided it is followed by continued diplomatic and policy coherence.
