India's telecom sector is on the verge of a major transformation, with a significant surge in job creation expected due to the expansion of broadband networks and the rollout of 5G technology. The rapid growth in digital infrastructure, especially the ongoing deployment of optical fibre cables, will create around one lakh new job opportunities in the next five years. These roles will primarily focus on fibre installation, maintenance, and repair, catering to the expanding demands of 4G, 5G, and broadband services across the country.
Growth of India’s Telecom Market
According to Mr. Subburathinam P, the Chief Strategy Officer at TeamLease Services, India’s telecom market is expected to grow from US$ 48.61 billion (Rs. 4,09,685 crore) in FY24 to US$ 76.16 billion (Rs. 6,41,876 crore) by FY29, reflecting a 9.40% annual growth rate. This significant growth is driven by the government’s focus on digital infrastructure and the rising demand for high-speed internet across urban and rural areas. As of 2023, India has laid approximately 7,00,000 kilometers of optical fibre cable, and this number is set to rise dramatically as telecom operators and the government work together to expand fibre networks.
Rising Demand for Skilled Fibre Technicians
The shift to 5G networks and enhanced broadband services will create an increased demand for skilled professionals in the telecom industry. This includes fibre engineers, splicers, installation and repair technicians, and field technicians who play a crucial role in the fabrication of telecom towers and the installation of fibre optic cables. As India’s telecom network infrastructure expands, especially with the introduction of 5G technology, there is an escalating need for fibre technicians.
The telecom industry, along with sectors like IT, construction, and manufacturing, employs over five lakh fibre technicians across the country. These professionals are vital to supporting network expansion in both urban and rural areas. With 5G technology set to peak by FY30, offering unprecedented speeds, lower latency, and enhanced connectivity, the demand for skilled fibre technicians will only continue to rise.
Challenges in the Telecom Workforce
Despite the rising demand for skilled fibre technicians, the telecom sector faces significant challenges related to workforce attrition. The attrition rate in the industry is currently estimated to be between 35-40%, which is relatively high. This issue can be attributed to several factors, including long working hours, limited salary growth, and the prevalent issue of employee poaching by other sectors. The lack of career progression and limited benefits has also contributed to the difficulty in retaining talent in the fibre technician workforce.
The Current active IPO is Rajputana Biodiesel, Rajesh Power Services, C2C Advanced System, Enviro Infra Engineers and Lomosaic India.
To mitigate these issues, it will be essential for companies and government initiatives to focus on improving employee retention by offering better salary packages, work-life balance, and career advancement opportunities. Training programs and upskilling initiatives will also be crucial in ensuring a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of a rapidly expanding digital infrastructure in India.
The Future of India’s Telecom Sector
Looking ahead, the future of India’s telecom sector looks bright. The ongoing expansion of 5G networks is expected to revolutionize communication in India, providing faster internet speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connectivity across the country. This will not only improve the quality of digital services but also create new job opportunities and further boost the telecom industry’s contribution to the Indian economy.
The growth of broadband and 5G networks in India will drive the demand for skilled professionals, particularly fibre technicians. As India continues to build and expand its telecom infrastructure, job opportunities in this field are set to increase, offering a wide range of career prospects for those entering the sector.
