On October 13, 2025, at least 10 members of the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) were killed in Lahore after paramilitary Rangers opened fire on protesters early Monday morning. The incident occurred during a pre-dawn operation aimed at dispersing demonstrators gathered for a planned march towards Islamabad.

The clashes left more than 50 policemen injured, while unrest spread to Muridke, reflecting the growing tensions between law enforcement authorities and TLP supporters. The violence unfolded after a police operation intended to prevent TLP supporters from mobilising for an anti-Israel protest outside the US Embassy in Islamabad.

The Punjab government had been in discussions with TLP leaders to address the situation. A Punjab official confirmed that Senator Rana Sanaullah, government adviser Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi, and Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique were actively holding talks with TLP representatives, with hopes of reaching a breakthrough. Despite these discussions, confrontations escalated late Wednesday night, causing significant disruption in Lahore.

Authorities have implemented heightened security measures in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, including road blockades, suspension of metro bus services, and partial restrictions on mobile internet to limit communication among demonstrators. Key routes to the capital have been sealed to prevent the march, which was intended to protest Israeli actions in Gaza.

TLP leadership claimed that, since the police operation began late Wednesday, at least 24 supporters have died and over 200 injured during the ongoing standoff. The government is working to manage the escalating situation while preventing further violence and maintaining law and order in Punjab and surrounding areas.

The incident highlights the volatile situation in Pakistan, the challenges of managing mass protests, and the sensitive dynamics between authorities and religious political movements such as the TLP. Both local and international attention is focused on how the standoff develops, given its potential impact on public safety and diplomatic concerns.
