What’s covered under the Article:

  • TMC ended the Parliament session on a positive note, working cohesively under Abhishek Banerjee’s leadership and strengthening its parliamentary strategy.

  • Congress and TMC aligned on Bengali Asmita and migrant issues, marking a revival in coordination within the INDIA bloc despite Bengal-level differences.

  • TMC contained internal rifts like the Kalyan-Mahua feud and tightened parliamentary discipline, signaling stronger unity and commitment ahead.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) ended the recent Parliament session on what many insiders are calling a “positive note”, showcasing stronger unity and sharper parliamentary strategies under the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee. While the session did not deliver any direct electoral victories, it was seen as a significant improvement for TMC in terms of organizational discipline, coordination, and influence within the Opposition bloc.

TMC’s Renewed Parliamentary Approach

For months, TMC’s internal functioning in Parliament was marred by disorganization and absenteeism, which drew criticism from party supremo Mamata Banerjee. Dissatisfied with how MPs were handling critical issues, she assigned greater responsibility to Abhishek Banerjee, who has since taken an active role in ensuring discipline, participation, and coordination.

This move seems to have paid off. Throughout the session, TMC MPs were more cohesive in their approach, participating in key debates, and standing firmly on issues like the Constitution Amendment Bill and women’s safety inside the House. Abhishek Banerjee was often seen reaching out to MPs individually, boosting morale, and taking leadership during protests, signaling his growing role in national politics.

Strengthening Ties with Congress

A key political highlight of the session was the warming of ties between TMC and Congress, a relationship that had been strained for more than a year. Both parties found common ground on issues of Bengali Asmita and the alleged harassment of migrant Bengalis, with Congress even moving an adjournment motion in support.

At a recent INDIA bloc dinner hosted by Rahul Gandhi, Abhishek Banerjee and Gandhi held separate discussions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), agreeing to pursue the issue more aggressively. This interaction not only signaled a thaw in relations but also suggested that national-level coordination between TMC and Congress may continue to grow, even if a formal Bengal alliance remains unlikely.

INDIA Bloc Unity Strengthened

The Parliament session also demonstrated stronger coordination within the INDIA bloc, as leaders from TMC, Congress, and Samajwadi Party engaged in joint protests and collaborative discussions. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was seen engaging directly with Abhishek Banerjee, reflecting a broader attempt by opposition parties to work together more systematically.

While questions remain about whether this unity can be sustained ahead of state elections, the session showed that Opposition parties are willing to set aside differences for key national issues, particularly in the Parliament setting.

Internal Rift Contained: Kalyan–Mahua Feud

Within TMC, one of the major challenges was the very public spat between MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra, which had caused embarrassment for the party. Mamata Banerjee herself expressed displeasure at the feud, resulting in Kalyan Banerjee resigning as Chief Whip.

Interestingly, both leaders were later seen standing together during a protest, signaling that the issue had been temporarily contained. Sources credit Abhishek Banerjee with mediating and ensuring that both leaders put aside differences in the interest of party unity.

Discipline Tightened in TMC

Perhaps the most notable outcome of this Parliament session was TMC’s new emphasis on discipline and attendance. Absenteeism, a chronic issue in the past, was flagged as a serious problem, with several MPs receiving warnings.

Notably, MP Kirti, who had written to the Union government seeking a CBI probe, was also cautioned. TMC has consistently opposed central investigative agencies, questioning their credibility, and the leadership took a firm stance that individual MPs must not deviate from the party’s position.

This stricter approach underscores TMC’s determination to present itself as a responsible, united, and proactive Opposition force in Parliament.

Abhishek Banerjee’s Growing Role

Throughout the session, Abhishek Banerjee emerged as the central figure driving TMC’s parliamentary strategies. From leading protests to personally reaching out to women MPs who were heckled during proceedings, he has become the face of the party’s parliamentary presence.

His increasing involvement indicates a generational shift within TMC, with younger leadership playing a more prominent role alongside Mamata Banerjee’s overarching guidance.

Looking Ahead

While this Parliament session cannot be equated to an electoral win, it has boosted TMC’s confidence and improved its standing within the Opposition bloc. By tightening discipline, mending fences with Congress, and containing internal conflicts, TMC has positioned itself as a stronger player ahead of upcoming state elections and national-level political battles.

Whether this momentum continues depends largely on how effectively the party balances state-level rivalries with its national Opposition role. Nonetheless, the recent developments mark a turning point for TMC, showing that it can function cohesively and assertively when required.
