On the morning of April 21, 2025, several roads leading into Delhi from its neighboring areas, including Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, were engulfed by traffic snarls due to extensive road closures and diversions set in place for the US Vice President JD Vance’s visit to India. This caused significant delays for commuters during peak hours. JD Vance, accompanied by his family, arrived in Delhi for a four-day visit, where he was welcomed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and other officials. In the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to host a dinner in honor of the visiting delegation.
Among the most affected areas were key roads such as the DND Flyway, the Meerut Expressway, and the stretch near Sector 62 in Noida. In Delhi, traffic congestion was particularly severe at spots like Dhaula Kuan, Lajpat Nagar, Mahipalpur, and Rajouri Garden. Commuters took to social media to express their frustration, with many reporting they were stuck for over an hour. A user on social media described an “insane traffic situation” near Sector 62 in Noida, while others reported standstills on the Delhi Meerut Expressway.
The Delhi Traffic Police had issued an advisory in light of the road restrictions, with specific guidelines about road closures and diversions during different time frames throughout the day. For instance, certain roads like Sardar Patel Marg and Gurugram Road were completely off-limits for parking between 9 AM and 11 AM, with violators facing towing actions. Additionally, diversions were implemented on roads such as Vande Mataram Marg, Talkatora Road, and Sheikh Mujib-Ur-Rehman Marg to alleviate the congestion.
In response to the traffic woes, many commuters criticized the lack of police presence on the ground to manage the snarls effectively. One commuter even suggested opening the Mahipalpur entry-exit for smoother traffic flow. The advisory also urged the use of public transport and recommended allowing ample time for travel to key destinations like ISBTs, railway stations, and airports.
JD Vance’s visit is his first official trip to India, and he will leave Delhi on the night of April 21. From there, he is expected to visit Jaipur and Agra, further increasing the need for heightened traffic control measures. The Delhi Traffic Police has cautioned that similar road diversions and closures may affect traffic for the duration of the visit.
