The expulsion of Canadian diplomats by India signifies escalating diplomatic tensions.

Trudeau expresses disappointment over India's refusal to cooperate and emphasizes the need for safety for Canadians.

Amid growing diplomatic troubles in the relationship between Canada and India, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed that his government has shared all relevant information with its Five Eyes partners, particularly the United States, regarding allegations of Indian officials' involvement in the murder of a Canadian national last year.

This announcement comes just hours after India expelled six Canadian diplomats and withdrew its high commissioner and other "targeted" officials from Canada. In a press conference held in Ottawa, Trudeau underscored the significance of these developments and their implications for bilateral ties.

Key Statements from Trudeau

During the press conference, Trudeau stated, “From the beginning, as of last summer, we've worked closely with our Five Eyes partners, particularly with the United States, where they have gone through a similar pattern of behavior from India in regards to an attempted extrajudicial killing.” He emphasized Canada’s commitment to upholding the rule of law while expressing his disappointment at the current state of relations.

Trudeau noted that he had discussed the situation with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, highlighting a coordinated response among allies regarding the perceived threats posed by Indian agents to Canadian citizens. Trudeau remarked, "The situation is extremely undesirable... Not only do we not want Canadians to be subjected to violence in their communities, in their homes, but we also do not want to have these tensions in relations with India."

In an attempt to resolve the ongoing tensions, Trudeau mentioned that his government had reached out to the Government of India through security and diplomatic channels, aiming to protect Canadians without compromising the relationship between the two countries. “Unfortunately, India has not chosen to work with us. They have chosen to deny, repel and to make personal attacks against this government,” he asserted.

Allegations Against India

Trudeau made serious allegations, claiming that India has employed its diplomats in organized crime activities aimed at threatening the safety of Canadians. “I believe that India has made a monumental mistake by choosing to use their diplomats and organized crime to attack Canadians... It's unacceptable,” he stated. He further emphasized that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has gathered "clear and compelling evidence" that agents of the Indian government are involved in clandestine operations targeting South Asian Canadians, including threats of violence and murder.

Despite multiple attempts to collaborate with Indian law enforcement on this matter, Trudeau asserted that Canada has faced repeated refusals from India. As a result, Canadian officials met with Indian representatives to present evidence implicating six Indian agents in criminal activities. Trudeau expressed frustration over India's lack of cooperation, stating, “This is why, this weekend, Canadian officials took an extraordinary step.”

India's Response

In response to the allegations and the escalating diplomatic crisis, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India issued a statement condemning Trudeau's government for its perceived support of extremism and violence against India. The MEA reiterated that India reserves the right to take further actions in response to the situation, asserting that Trudeau's hostility toward India has been evident for some time.

This diplomatic spat has significantly deteriorated relations between the two nations, which have been strained in recent years due to various geopolitical issues. As both countries navigate this crisis, the implications for their future relationship remain uncertain.
