US President Donald Trump made candid remarks about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, describing it as an absolute bloodbath and highlighting the staggering human cost. Speaking to the media on May 20, 2025, Trump revealed that an estimated 5,000 young soldiers are being killed every single week on average in the conflict, with the real number possibly even higher. Alongside soldiers, countless civilians in towns caught in the crossfire are also losing their lives.
Trump emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating he had seen satellite images depicting the destruction and human toll as "so bad, so horrible." His comments underscored the urgent need to stop the violence and seek peace.
In recent days, Trump had engaged in separate phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He conveyed cautious optimism, saying that some progress is being made toward a ceasefire. However, specifics about when or where negotiations might occur, or which parties would be involved, were not disclosed.
Trump pointed out that this war was not initiated by his administration but was inherited from the previous US leadership, questioning how it was allowed to escalate. His administration is now attempting to bring both sides to the negotiating table.
Notably, Trump's announcement followed the first direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in over two years. Those negotiations in Turkey resulted in a limited prisoner exchange but failed to yield a ceasefire or halt the fighting.
Ahead of the calls, the White House expressed frustration with both Putin and Zelensky over the ongoing conflict’s persistence. Vice President JD Vance stated that Trump would seek to gauge Putin’s genuine interest in peace and warned that if Russia was not serious, the US might disengage from ceasefire efforts altogether.
Trump reiterated his belief that Putin is serious about peace, stating that the details of any agreement would be worked out between the two conflicting parties, as only they know the full scope of the negotiations.
This development marks a new chapter in the efforts to resolve one of the deadliest conflicts in recent history, with millions of lives affected and the global community watching closely for signs of peace.
