What's covered under the Article:

  • Trump claims he ‘solved’ the India-Pakistan standoff during Operation Sindoor, saying 6–7 planes were knocked out and both countries were ready to go nuclear.

  • India firmly denies any external mediation, asserting the ceasefire was requested by Pakistan after India achieved all its objectives in the operation.

  • Tensions remain after Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Indian imports, while Pakistan praises him and even nominated him for a peace prize.

US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he personally brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, suggesting that the two nations were on the brink of nuclear escalation. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said, “Planes were being knocked out of the air, six or seven planes came down. They were ready to go nuclear. We solved that.” He added that the India-Pakistan ceasefire was one of six major conflicts he claims to have resolved in the past six months, once again taking credit for the de-escalation.

Operation Sindoor, conducted in May 2025, was India’s retaliatory strike against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) after the Pahalgam terror attack killed 26 civilians. The operation triggered a four-day military standoff in which both air forces were put on alert. India targeted nine terror camps with precise air and drone strikes, and subsequently announced that it had achieved all its military objectives.

Despite Trump’s repeated statements, New Delhi has firmly denied any third-party role in resolving the standoff. During a recent speech in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi clarified that no external pressure was applied on India and that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted the Indian side to request a ceasefire after suffering heavy losses. “India stopped the operation only after achieving 100% of its goals,” he said.

Indian officials have consistently stated that no mediation was accepted, and that Trump’s claims of resolving the conflict are factually incorrect. The MEA has also criticised attempts at what it called “post-event credit claiming”.

Meanwhile, tensions between New Delhi and Washington have worsened after the US imposed 50% tariffs on Indian imports over India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. While India publicly dismissed the move as “unjustified and unreasonable”, Pakistan has welcomed Trump’s role, with some officials even nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize for “preventing a nuclear war”.

Trump also commented on his upcoming Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where he hopes to make progress on a separate peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war. While expressing optimism, he said an immediate ceasefire might not happen, but stated that he “wants to save thousands of lives”, and insisted that the conflict would never have occurred during his previous presidency.

As India continues to publicly dismiss Trump’s narrative, the differing claims from Washington and New Delhi underscore the diplomatic friction between the two countries at a time when geopolitical alignments across Asia are rapidly evolving.
