US President Donald Trump has once again underscored his stance on the ongoing Ukraine conflict, claiming that Russia would never have invaded Ukraine if he had been in office. Trump emphasized his strong relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that the invasion would not have occurred under his leadership, accusing Joe Biden of being disrespected by Putin. "Russia never would have gone into Ukraine. I had a very strong understanding with Putin," Trump said in his remarks, further asserting that the war was a result of the lack of strong leadership under Biden.
In a meeting with the media on January 21, Trump also warned that the US would likely impose additional sanctions on Russia if Putin does not come to the negotiation table. He stressed that the war in Ukraine was unnecessary and that, under his administration, Russia would have respected the United States and refrained from invading Ukraine. He added, "The war should have never started. If you had a competent President, which you didn’t, the war wouldn’t have happened."
Trump's rhetoric on the situation pointed to the failure of Biden’s foreign policy, accusing the current administration of mishandling international relations with Russia. He criticized the ongoing cost of US involvement in the conflict, particularly highlighting that the European Union should be contributing more. "Under Biden, we're in there for USD 200 billion more than the European Union. What are we, stupid?" Trump remarked, emphasizing the disproportionate financial burden borne by the US.
Trump also revealed that he has spoken to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and is open to meeting Vladimir Putin anytime to work towards peace. Trump expressed deep concern for the loss of life in Ukraine, calling the situation "vicious" and stating that millions of people have died. He urged for an immediate end to the violence and said, "The thing with Ukraine is that many more people died than what you're reporting."
Regarding military aid to Ukraine, Trump suggested that the US might reconsider its policy, saying he would look into whether continued support for Ukraine is in the best interest of the American people. He also noted that Zelensky had told him that he strongly desires peace, but as Trump pointed out, "It takes two to tango."
The geopolitical tensions surrounding the Ukraine crisis are likely to remain a focal point in US foreign policy discussions as the Biden administration faces continued scrutiny from both domestic and international sources. Trump's comments, particularly his willingness to meet Putin and his criticisms of the financial contributions of European allies, signal a continued debate on how the US should engage with Russia and Ukraine.
