What's covered under the Article:

  • Trump's strong stance on BRICS: US President Donald Trump claims the BRICS group "broke up" after he threatened a 150% tariff on countries undermining the US dollar.
  • De-dollarisation conflict: Trump has long opposed BRICS's attempts at creating an alternative currency, viewing it as a threat to the US dollar's global dominance.
  • BRICS summit upcoming: Despite Trump's claims, BRICS remains active, with the next summit scheduled for July 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In a fresh attack on BRICS nations, US President Donald Trump claimed that the intergovernmental organization, known for its de-dollarisation attempts, “broke up” after he threatened to impose a 150% tariff on any BRICS countries seeking to undermine the US dollar. Trump's accusations came amid ongoing tensions surrounding the rise of an alternative global currency and BRICS’s push for de-dollarisation.

Trump's Threat to BRICS

Trump’s remarks were in response to BRICS's continued efforts to explore a currency alternative to the US dollar, a move the US President has strongly opposed. According to Trump, BRICS countries had been plotting to destroy the US dollar, and in response, he issued a stern warning. "When I came in, the first thing I said was any BRICS state that even mentions the destruction of the dollar will be charged a 150% tariff, and we don’t want your goods," Trump declared. He further added that the BRICS states had "broken up" and hinted that the group had gone quiet in the wake of his warning.

Trump's aggressive stance on the BRICS nations' attempts to create an alternative currency stems from concerns over the US dollar's dominance in international trade and finance. The President has consistently stressed the importance of maintaining the dollar’s global position, which is central to US economic power.

Trump Declares BRICS "Dead"

Just before meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month, Trump intensified his rhetoric against BRICS, declaring the organization to be “dead.” He claimed the group had been formed with a “bad purpose” and asserted that he had informed BRICS members that if they attempted to “play games with the dollar,” they would face a 100% tariff. These remarks highlight Trump’s fierce opposition to any efforts that might reduce the global reliance on the US dollar.

BRICS Still Active Despite Trump's Comments

While Trump has dismissed the significance of the BRICS grouping, claiming it had disbanded, the organization remains active. The BRICS bloc, which was formed in 2009, currently comprises 10 countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE. Notably, BRICS has always excluded the United States as a member, which has led to friction in global diplomatic and economic relations.

Despite Trump’s critical remarks, the BRICS summit is scheduled for July 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Brazil, which currently chairs the bloc, has expressed its commitment to focusing on promoting global governance reform and strengthening cooperation among the countries of the Global South.

The Future of BRICS and the US Dollar

The future of BRICS as a global bloc and its ongoing attempts to de-dollarise international trade will likely continue to be a point of contention. Trump’s trade threats and ongoing opposition may not prevent BRICS from pushing forward with its vision of a new currency system. However, the pressure from the US, including tariffs and economic sanctions, will likely influence how these countries navigate their future economic and diplomatic strategies. As the July 2025 BRICS summit approaches, it will be interesting to see whether Trump’s comments and his tough stance on the US dollar will have a lasting impact on the bloc's unity and its de-dollarisation efforts.
