During a press interaction at the Oval Office on August 14, 2025, US President Donald Trump claimed that India and Pakistan were on the verge of a nuclear confrontation during the four-day military standoff in May 2025. Trump alleged that six to seven aircraft were "knocked out of the air" in the conflict, and asserted that he personally helped resolve the situation before it escalated further.

The military standoff was triggered by India’s Operation Sindoor on the night of May 7-8, 2025. The operation targeted multiple terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, primarily tourists. The ensuing confrontation between the Indian and Pakistani militaries lasted four days, culminating in a ceasefire announced on May 10, following a call between the Pakistani and Indian Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO).

Despite Trump’s claims, the Indian government clarified that no third-party mediation was involved in resolving the standoff. Later, in June 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a 35-minute telephonic conversation with Trump, which was initiated at Trump’s request. During the call, Modi explicitly rejected any form of mediation between India and Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that India’s actions during Operation Sindoor were precise, non-escalatory, and strictly targeted at terrorist hideouts, highlighting the political unanimity in India regarding its military stance.

The remarks by Trump reignited discussions on the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict, nuclear readiness, and the role of international actors. While Trump claims he intervened to prevent nuclear escalation, India maintains that its measured approach and strategic operations ensured stability without third-party involvement, underscoring the country’s sovereign decision-making and national security strategy.
