  • Trump confirms U.S. proposal sent to Iran during Middle East trip as expert-level nuclear negotiations advance

  • Iran insists on uranium enrichment rights while U.S. demands halt, complicating efforts for nuclear agreement

  • Talks mediated in Oman and Rome amid rising regional tensions with threats of military action from both sides

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed Friday that the United States has presented a formal proposal to Iran regarding its rapidly advancing nuclear program. This marks the first official acknowledgment that a U.S. offer is now with Tehran as negotiations continue between American and Iranian officials.

The discussions have progressed to what Trump described as the “expert” level, meaning negotiators from both sides are trying to hammer out the technical details of a potential agreement. However, a key sticking point remains Iran’s insistence on retaining its right to enrich uranium, which the Trump administration increasingly demands Tehran to relinquish.

Trump made these remarks aboard Air Force One while concluding his trip to the United Arab Emirates, the final stop of his three-nation Middle East tour that also included visits to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Throughout his visit, Trump emphasized that Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear bomb, consistent with U.S. intelligence assessments that Tehran is not actively pursuing a weapon but is close to having that capability.

When asked directly whether a formal U.S. proposal had been handed to Iran by Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump replied, “They have a proposal,” adding that Iran must move quickly or risk “something bad” happening. However, he did not provide specifics on the proposal’s contents.

Iran has yet to publicly confirm receipt of any U.S. proposal. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently stated at the Tehran International Book Fair that Iran had not received a formal offer from the U.S. and criticized contradictory statements from Washington as either confusion or a negotiation tactic.

Negotiations have been held in Oman and Rome, with Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi acting as a mediator trusted by both nations. The talks aim to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing long-standing economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. on Tehran.

Tensions remain high, with Trump warning of possible airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities if no agreement is reached. Iranian officials have hinted at the potential pursuit of nuclear weapons as their uranium stockpile nears weapons-grade levels. Meanwhile, Israel has also threatened unilateral strikes if it perceives a nuclear threat from Iran, further complicating an already volatile Middle East region affected by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
