WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 4, 2025:
U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters early Friday that he is disappointed in Russian President Vladimir Putin after their latest phone call produced no progress on ending the war in Ukraine, offering his bleakest assessment yet of their attempts to broker peace.
“It was a pretty long call, we talked about a lot of things, including Iran, and we also talked about, as you know, the war with Ukraine. And I'm not happy about that,” Mr. Trump said in remarks to the press.
He added that he plans to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later Friday, underscoring growing concern in Washington over the more than three-year-old conflict, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
Trump’s comments mark a sharp change in tone. After most of his five prior calls with Putin since returning to power in January, he offered optimistic accounts of potential breakthroughs, frequently describing the conversations as “productive” and holding out hope for a negotiated settlement.
But peace efforts have stalled. The U.S. recently paused some weapons shipments to Kyiv, including Patriot and Stinger missiles essential to Ukraine’s air defense. The move has fueled frustration in Kyiv and emboldened Russia to ramp up aerial assaults, hitting Ukraine with hundreds of drones and missiles in record-scale barrages in recent days.
Trump also rejected Putin’s recent offer to mediate in the escalating Iran-Israel conflict. According to officials, the U.S. president told his Russian counterpart to focus on ending the Ukraine war instead.
Tensions have grown between Washington and Moscow as Russia has intensified its military operations in Ukraine and maintained close ties with Iran. Meanwhile, U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to convene a fresh round of peace talks have yielded little progress, with both Moscow and Kyiv unwilling to make concessions.
The White House has signaled that while President Trump remains open to direct diplomacy, his patience is wearing thin. Friday’s comments appear to confirm that the administration is reassessing its approach to engaging Russia on the Ukraine question.
As the war drags on, the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, and calls are growing for the U.S. to clarify its strategy—balancing pressure on Russia with support for Ukraine and keeping European allies unified behind sanctions and military aid.
Mr. Trump’s planned call with President Zelensky is expected to focus on security guarantees, economic support, and prospects for renewed negotiations, though expectations for an immediate breakthrough remain low.
