In a video conference at the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump reiterated his controversial stance that OPEC should cut the price of oil in order to end the Russia-Ukraine war. According to Trump, the oil price cuts would directly impact the war, which he believes has resulted in a tragic loss of lives for both Russian and Ukrainian soldiers. He noted that the conflict has caused over a million deaths, and the war continues to escalate. Trump stated, "If you have it high, that war is not going to end so easily," and urged OPEC to "get on the ball" and reduce oil prices.
Trump's assertion that reducing oil prices could quickly halt the war echoes his earlier remarks on how the conflict could have been avoided. He has repeatedly claimed that had he been in office in 2022, the crisis in Ukraine would not have occurred. These claims were supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who also stated that the conflict could have been prevented under Trump's leadership. In an interview with Russian state television, Putin praised Trump as a pragmatic and clever leader, adding that the Ukraine war might not have happened if Trump had won the 2020 US election.
While Trump has dismissed the legitimacy of the 2020 election results, he has also been critical of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's refusal to negotiate with Russia in 2022. Trump suggested that Zelenskyy should have struck a deal with Putin to prevent the war.
Putin also noted the importance of US-Russia relations, suggesting the two countries could find common ground on issues like nuclear arms control and global economic challenges. He highlighted that both countries, as major oil producers, would benefit from stable global oil prices and avoiding extremes in price fluctuations.
As tensions between the US and Russia continue, both Trump and Putin have signaled their willingness to engage in diplomatic talks. Trump’s call for OPEC to cut oil prices adds another layer to the complex geopolitical landscape that continues to shape the conflict in Ukraine.
