US President Donald Trump described Chinese President Xi Jinping as tough and extremely hard to make a deal with in a statement made on June 4, 2025. This comment comes shortly after Mr Trump accused China of violating a recent agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Mr Trump said he liked President Xi and always would, but emphasised that Xi is very tough and hard to negotiate with. This reflects the challenging nature of ongoing US-China trade talks.

The White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt had earlier confirmed that Mr Trump is scheduled to speak with President Xi this week. The conversation aims to resolve differences over last month’s tariff agreement reached in Geneva, as well as broader trade issues between the two countries.

The US-China trade relationship remains tense, with recent court rulings adding complexity. Last week, a US trade court ruled that Mr Trump had exceeded his authority when imposing most tariffs on imports from China and other countries under an emergency powers act.

However, a federal appeals court quickly reinstated these tariffs, pausing the trade court’s ruling while it considers the government’s appeal. These legal developments indicate the uncertain and evolving nature of the trade dispute.

Both nations appear to be seeking dialogue to address disagreements, but the tone from President Trump’s comments suggests that finding common ground remains difficult. The upcoming talks between Mr Trump and Mr Xi will be closely watched by global markets and policymakers
