  • Trump says deploying troops prevented LA from falling into chaos while calling protestors radical left lunatics at a Kennedy Centre press event

  • California sues the federal government as Governor Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass oppose military deployment and immigration raids

  • Over 1400 migrants detained near the southern border amid growing criticism of Trump’s use of military under his immigration enforcement strategy

Former US President Donald Trump has claimed full credit for what he describes as the prevention of chaos in Los Angeles, saying his intervention saved the city from destruction at the hands of radical left elements. Trump made the comments during a public appearance at The Kennedy Centre on June 11, 2025, where he was attending a show with First Lady Melania Trump.

Speaking to the press, Trump strongly defended his decision to deploy US Marines and the National Guard to Los Angeles, despite facing stiff opposition from California Governor Gavin Newsom and other local leaders. He warned that without his actions, Los Angeles would have descended into flames.

He referred to the protestors and activists as radical left lunatics, claiming they are tough, intelligent, and possibly even paid operatives. Trump maintained that the situation is not yet over, hinting at continued unrest and the potential need for further action.

The move has triggered a major constitutional debate in the United States regarding the extent to which federal authorities, especially the military, can intervene in domestic crises without state approval. Governor Newsom’s administration has already filed a lawsuit against the federal government, seeking to block the ongoing military deployment.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has also spoken out against the deployment, urging Trump to withdraw the troops and halt federal raids. She stated that the city requires dialogue and community action, not military pressure.

Despite these calls for restraint, Trump continues to insist that the use of force is essential. He says his approach is necessary to prevent further deterioration of law and order and protect the city from anarchic elements.

The operation goes beyond just crowd control. US military forces have been detaining individuals accused of entering what the administration recently declared a national defence zone along the southern US border.

In one such incident, Lieutenant Colonel Chad Campbell of the US Army explained that troops temporarily detained three migrants until Border Patrol agents arrived within three minutes. He termed the action as a rapid and necessary intervention to protect restricted areas.

This new enforcement strategy has led to over 1,400 migrants being charged with unlawful entry into militarised zones. The legal justification for this escalation is being challenged, especially due to the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the use of military in civilian law enforcement except under narrowly defined circumstances.

The White House argues that the deployment falls under the military purpose doctrine, which allows military intervention if the activity aligns with national security objectives. However, civil rights groups, legal experts, and state officials have expressed concern that this sets a dangerous precedent.

Critics believe that the militarised approach to immigration and protest management is not only excessive but also undermines civilian authority and local governance. The ongoing legal cases may shape future interpretations of how much control the federal government can exert in state matters.

Meanwhile, protests in Los Angeles continue, with civil society groups calling for demilitarisation, greater accountability, and respect for state sovereignty. The opposition argues that federal raids and detentions are contributing to fear and disruption within immigrant communities.

Trump, however, remains unmoved by the criticism. He has repeatedly presented himself as the only leader with the strength and determination to protect American cities from what he calls left-wing anarchy. He believes that the situation in Los Angeles is proof that a strong stance is not only justified but essential.

As the political and legal battle unfolds, Trump’s latest actions highlight the persistent tension between state and federal authority in the United States. The situation raises crucial questions about executive overreach, the role of the military in domestic matters, and the boundaries of immigration enforcement policies.

For now, Los Angeles remains under partial federal control, with military units stationed in key areas. Whether the courts will uphold this controversial strategy or strike it down as unconstitutional remains to be seen.

Trump’s claim of having saved the city adds a new chapter to his law-and-order narrative, one that could influence political debates in the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections, and potentially his own 2028 campaign ambitions
