US President Donald Trump has taken another major foreign policy step by announcing the withdrawal of the United States from the UN Human Rights Council and halting aid to Palestinian refugees. The move follows his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reinforcing his administration’s stance on UN bias against Israel.
"I've always felt that the UN has tremendous potential. It's not living up to that potential right now. They've got to get their act together," Trump said while justifying his decision.
A Major Setback for Palestinian Refugees
Trump’s decision to defund the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides health care, education, and humanitarian aid to millions of Palestinian refugees, is seen as a severe blow to Palestinian communities.
The Biden administration had previously restored some US funding to UNRWA after Trump first cut it in 2018. However, recent allegations by Israel that Hamas militants had links with UNRWA personnel led to renewed scrutiny. UNRWA has denied these claims.
“The duty of the international community today is to support humanitarian efforts, not weaken them,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, highlighting UNRWA’s crucial role in Palestine.
US and the UN: A Financial Review
Trump’s executive order also calls for a reassessment of US financial contributions to the UN, citing “wild disparities” in funding among member countries.
Currently, the US covers 22% of the UN’s budget, making it the largest financial contributor. China follows as the second-largest donor. Trump's move to review US commitments could have far-reaching implications for global diplomacy and UN operations.
Additionally, Trump has ordered a review of US participation in UNESCO, the Paris-based UN agency overseeing education, science, and cultural heritage. This follows longstanding US-Israel concerns over alleged anti-Israel bias in UNESCO resolutions.
Political Implications and Global Reactions
Trump’s latest withdrawal from international institutions signals a return to his "America First" policy, which prioritizes US sovereignty over multilateral agreements. However, critics argue that these decisions weaken US diplomatic influence and undermine global cooperation.
Meanwhile, Israel has welcomed Trump’s actions, reiterating its longstanding view that the UN unfairly targets Israeli policies. On the other hand, Palestinian leaders and humanitarian groups warn that defunding UNRWA will worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank.
