What's covered under the Article:

  • Trump proposes US takeover of Gaza for redevelopment, calling it “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
  • Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia strongly oppose relocating Palestinians, warning of regional instability.
  • Saudi Arabia reaffirms its commitment to a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Donald Trump’s recent proposal to take over the Gaza Strip for redevelopment has triggered widespread condemnation from key Middle Eastern allies, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan. His remarks, made after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggest resettling displaced Palestinians outside Gaza while the US assumes control of the territory.

Trump, who envisions transforming Gaza into “the Riviera of the Middle East,” provided no clarity on how the US would legally enforce such a plan.

"We’ll make sure that it’s done world-class. It’ll be wonderful for the people — Palestinians mostly, we’re talking about," Trump stated.

He further argued that Palestinians should not return to Gaza, calling the region a historical site of violence.

"You look over the decades, it’s all death in Gaza. If we can get a beautiful area to resettle people permanently, in nice homes where they can be happy and not be shot, that would be great."

Strong Reactions from Middle East Allies

Trump’s remarks have been met with fierce opposition from US allies in the Middle East, who warn that any forced relocation of Palestinians could destabilize the region and expand the conflict.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry released a statement rejecting Trump’s vision, reinforcing its long-standing position in favor of Palestinian sovereignty.

"The duty of the international community today is to alleviate the severe human suffering endured by the Palestinian people, who will remain committed to their land and will not budge from it," the statement read.

Saudi Arabia is currently in negotiations with the United States regarding a potential diplomatic deal with Israel. However, officials have maintained that any formal recognition of Israel is contingent on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Similarly, Egypt and Jordan expressed concern that Trump's plan would undermine decades of diplomatic efforts toward a two-state solution, which has been a pillar of US-Middle East relations for years.

Future Implications for US-Middle East Relations

The backlash against Trump's proposal signals potential strains in US relations with its key Middle Eastern allies. Experts suggest that pushing forward with such a plan could further isolate the US from international diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The debate over Palestinian resettlement and Gaza’s governance remains a critical issue, with many questioning whether Trump's proposal is politically viable or simply a provocative statement as he prepares for his 2024 re-election campaign.
