Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, reports surfaced that Turkey had allegedly provided arms and ammunition to Pakistan. The claim, which went viral, stated that several Turkish C-130E Hercules planes had landed in Karachi, delivering military equipment. However, the Turkish government swiftly rejected these reports, with the Directorate of Communications of the Turkish Presidency issuing a statement denying the claims.
According to the official statement from Ankara, the cargo planes that landed in Pakistan were there for refuelling purposes only, and the reports claiming they were carrying weapons were entirely false. The Turkish government emphasized that only one C-130E aircraft had arrived, and its mission was strictly related to refuelling, not arms delivery. This clarification was shared via a social media post by Turkish officials, who stated that the reports circulating in some media outlets were unfounded and inaccurate.
The background to these reports lies in the ongoing diplomatic and military tensions between India and Pakistan. The two nations have been engaged in a war of words and actions following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left several casualties and intensified animosities. As a result, both countries have made diplomatic moves and countermeasures to escalate the situation further.
India, in its response to the terrorist attack, decided to hold the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance, expelled Pakistani nationals, and designated the Pakistani military advisors in New Delhi as persona non grata. Moreover, India has vowed to take strong retaliatory actions against those responsible for the attack. In a statement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared India's firm resolve to fight terrorism, asserting that India would "identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers" and pursue them "to the ends of the earth."
On the other hand, Pakistan has retaliated by closing its airspace to Indian airlines, blocking the Wagah border, suspending all trade relations with India, and revisiting the Simla Agreement—a crucial diplomatic accord between the two nations. The diplomatic measures have further strained an already fragile relationship.
With Turkey's refutation of the arms delivery reports, it remains unclear how the geopolitical dynamics will evolve in this highly volatile region. Turkey’s role in the dispute between India and Pakistan has been called into question, especially as global powers watch the escalation closely.
This development comes at a time when the situation in Jammu and Kashmir continues to unravel, with rising calls for stronger responses from the Indian government. As tensions mount, it seems that both India and Pakistan are preparing for a prolonged phase of diplomatic confrontations and military standoffs, leaving little hope for an immediate resolution.
