The Indian Army successfully foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Bandipora’s Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir, killing two terrorists in a swift counter-terror action on Thursday, August 28, 2025. The operation took place near Naushehra Naar, where alert troops intercepted a group of infiltrators attempting to cross into Indian territory.
According to officials, security forces acted on specific intelligence inputs provided by the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) regarding a likely infiltration attempt in the area. Following the alert, the Army’s Chinar Corps, in coordination with the J&K Police, launched a joint operation in the region.
How the encounter unfolded
The Army reported that suspicious movement was detected along the LoC in the Gurez sector. Troops challenged the infiltrators, after which the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. The soldiers retaliated with effective gunfire, killing two infiltrators on the spot.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Army said: “Based on intelligence provided by JKP regarding likely infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched by Indian Army and J&K Police in Gurez Sector. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged, which resulted in terrorists opening indiscriminate fire. Troops responded with effective fire, neutralising two terrorists. Operation is in progress.”
Search operation underway
Following the gunfight, security forces immediately launched a search operation in the surrounding areas to ensure there were no other infiltrators or hidden threats in the region. Officials confirmed that the operation is still ongoing and troops are maintaining heightened alertness along the LoC to prevent any further attempts.
Context of recent encounters
The latest operation comes amid a series of counter-terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier this month, during Operation Akhal, security forces neutralised six terrorists in total across multiple days of engagement in the Akhal forest area, with one soldier sustaining injuries in the crossfire.
On August 2, three militants were killed in the Akhal forest area of Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district after heavy gunfire broke out between militants and joint security forces. That operation was initiated on August 1, based on credible intelligence reports about the presence of armed militants in the dense forest region.
Growing infiltration threats
Security agencies have consistently reported that attempts at infiltration along the LoC rise during the summer months, as terrorists take advantage of clear weather conditions and difficult terrain to cross into Indian territory. Bandipora and Gurez sectors are particularly vulnerable due to their geography and proximity to infiltration routes from across the border.
The Army’s latest action underscores the importance of intelligence-sharing and joint operations between the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in thwarting such infiltration attempts. Officials noted that constant surveillance, use of modern equipment, and active patrolling have played a crucial role in curbing infiltration attempts in recent years.
Significance of the operation
The killing of two terrorists in Bandipora’s Gurez sector marks another significant success for the Indian security forces in their ongoing campaign against cross-border terrorism. With the search operation still in progress, authorities remain vigilant to ensure complete area sanitisation and prevent any potential threat to civilian populations in nearby villages.
As tensions along the LoC continue, the Indian Army’s quick response and robust counter-terror strategy highlight the persistent challenges of safeguarding the border in Jammu and Kashmir while also sending a clear message that infiltration attempts will be met with decisive action.
