What's covered under the Article:

  1. FP-1 drone capabilities: Fire Point’s FP-1 long-range drones travel 1,600 km, carry 60 kg explosives, and operate without airfields, allowing precision strikes deep inside Russia.

  2. Fire Point’s rise: Started by a small team with no weapons experience, the company now produces nearly 100 drones daily, powering 60% of Ukraine’s deep strikes on Russian targets.

  3. Strategic impact and future tech: Ukraine’s focus on domestic drone and missile production, including a new 3,000 km cruise missile, strengthens national defense amid limited Western support.

Ukraine’s private defence company Fire Point has rapidly emerged as a key player in the country’s military innovation, producing drones capable of striking deep into Russian territory amid the ongoing conflict. The FP-1 drone, designed for precision and operational flexibility, can travel up to 1,600 kilometers (994 miles), carrying a 60 kg explosive payload, without relying on traditional airfields. This long-range capability allows the drones to target critical infrastructure such as ammunition depots, oil facilities, and weapons factories.

The FP-1 represents a major leap in Ukraine’s asymmetric warfare strategy. Developed by a team of engineers and designers with backgrounds in architecture, gaming, and construction, Fire Point transformed their skills into defence innovation after Russia’s 2022 invasion. Starting with small production runs, the company now manufactures nearly 100 drones per day, up from just 30 per month in the previous year. Each drone costs around USD 55,000, making it a cost-effective yet impactful addition to Ukraine’s arsenal.

The drones have already been pivotal, executing approximately 60% of Ukraine’s deep strikes on Russian targets. Beyond FP-1, Fire Point is developing a new cruise missile capable of reaching 3,000 km, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to mass-produce, further enhancing the nation’s strategic deterrence.

Ukraine’s focus on domestic drone and missile production is driven by limited access to Western long-range weaponry. The government invests roughly USD 10 billion annually in local arms development and has relaxed regulations to facilitate rapid innovation and deployment. Many factories, including Fire Point’s secret facilities, operate covertly—sometimes within civilian areas—to avoid Russian airstrikes, highlighting both ingenuity and risk in Ukraine’s defence strategy.

Fire Point’s head of production, Iryna Terekh, emphasized the significance of air capabilities as Ukraine’s main asymmetric advantage, noting that manpower and resources cannot match Russia’s. Despite ongoing peace negotiations, Ukrainian defence officials remain focused on self-reliance, with Terekh stating, “We are preparing for a bigger, much scarier war.

The FP-1 drones exemplify Ukraine’s rapid technological adaptation in modern warfare, transforming a small startup into a cornerstone of national defense and reshaping the dynamics of the ongoing conflict with Russia.
