The Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS-1) aims for launch by December 2028, enhancing India's space capabilities.

The Gaganyaan Programme's total funding has risen to US$ 2.41 billion, including new missions and hardware.

The initiative will create opportunities in science and technology for India's youth and boost employment in high-tech sectors.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the development of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS-1) as part of an expanded Gaganyaan Programme. This ambitious initiative includes the creation of the first module of the BAS and the execution of missions to validate the technologies necessary for building and operating the station.

Revised Scope and Funding

The revised scope and funding of the Gaganyaan Programme will encompass new developments for the BAS, including precursor missions and additional requirements to ensure the program meets its ongoing needs. Notably, the revision introduces an additional uncrewed mission and new hardware for the Gaganyaan Programme. The first unit of the BAS-1 is targeted for launch by December 2028.

Originally approved in December 2018, the Gaganyaan Programme focuses on human spaceflight to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and aims to establish a foundation for India’s long-term human space exploration goals. The vision under Amrit Kaal includes plans for an operational Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035 and a crewed lunar mission by 2040.

Collaboration and Technological Advancements

Led by ISRO in partnership with industry, academia, and national agencies, the program aims to develop critical technologies for long-duration human space missions. The current Gaganyaan Programme is set to complete four missions by 2026, with the BAS module development and four demonstration missions expected by December 2028.

India is poised to gain essential technological capabilities for human space missions to LEO. The BAS will facilitate microgravity-based scientific research and technology development, leading to technological spin-offs, innovation, and increased industrial participation in high-tech sectors, resulting in significant employment generation.

Financial Commitment

The total funding for the Gaganyaan Programme has now increased to US$ 2.41 billion (Rs. 20,193 crore), which includes an additional US$ 1.33 billion (Rs. 11,170 crore). This initiative not only promises advancements in space technology but also provides valuable opportunities for the country’s youth in science, technology, and microgravity-based research, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
