What's Covered in the Article:
- The UNSC adopted a US-drafted resolution demanding an end to the war, omitting any mention of Russia's role.
- The US voted against a separate UNGA resolution calling for Russia’s withdrawal but abstained from its own revised draft after amendments.
- The vote highlights growing divisions between the US and Europe on Ukraine, as Trump shifts focus towards negotiations.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday adopted a resolution drafted by the United States, calling for an end to the war in Ukraine without explicitly mentioning Russia’s role as the aggressor. The move marks a significant shift in US policy under President Donald Trump, diverging from previous Western resolutions that condemned Moscow’s actions outright.
Key Votes & US Policy Shift
The resolution received 10 votes in favor, while five members—including France and Britain—abstained. The US pushed for this version in line with Trump’s broader diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, despite his recent criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling him “a dictator without elections.”
Earlier, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) voted on a separate resolution, backed by European nations, demanding the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops. However, in a surprising move, the US voted against it, signaling a clear departure from its previous stance on Ukraine.
India, continuing its neutral position, abstained from voting on both the UNGA and UNSC resolutions.
A Growing US-Europe Divide on Ukraine
The votes at both the UNGA and UNSC underscore the deepening rift between the US and its European allies regarding Ukraine. France and other European nations pushed for stronger language blaming Russia, but the US preferred a more neutral resolution, reflecting Trump’s efforts to broker peace and shift focus away from direct confrontation with Russia.
What’s Next?
With the US taking a softer stance on Russia and seeking a negotiated settlement, tensions are expected to rise within NATO and the Western alliance’s approach to Ukraine. The resolution's adoption at the UNSC, despite abstentions from key allies, highlights a changing global dynamic as Trump redefines America’s foreign policy on the third anniversary of the Ukraine war.
