A video from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s monsoon session has gone viral, capturing a heated confrontation between two BJP legislators during a debate on the state government’s Vision Document 2047. The incident unfolded on Wednesday when Rajesh Chaudhary, BJP MLA from Mathura, entered into a loud verbal spat with Saurabh Srivastava, the party's legislator from Varanasi, over a disagreement about who would get to speak first on behalf of the ruling party.

In the video clip, Chaudhary can be seen standing and accusing Srivastava of not forwarding his name to the Speaker, leading to a sharp exchange of words between the two. At one point, Chaudhary seemingly attempted to move toward Srivastava — who was seated two rows ahead — prompting a number of fellow legislators to intervene and prevent the situation from escalating into a physical scuffle. Several MLAs were seen trying to calm both sides and restore order in the Assembly.

The footage quickly spread on social media, where it was shared by Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Akhilesh criticised the BJP, writing, “Misbehaviour and foul language are the steps to progress in the BJP. Condemnable!” He alleged that the ruling party promotes leaders who engage in such behaviour and said it reflects the deteriorating standards of political discourse under the BJP.

In response to Akhilesh Yadav’s criticism, Rajesh Chaudhary hit back, referring to a recent incident in which Maulana Sajid Rashidi, president of the All India Imam Association, allegedly made misogynistic remarks about SP MP Dimple Yadav during a television debate. Chaudhary accused Akhilesh of remaining silent at that time, saying, “If you have some shame left, then open your mouth and answer the fanatic who insulted the honour of your house and a woman. We are with Dimple ji in the honour of women.”

The argument in the Assembly has now not only sparked debate about internal tensions within the BJP, but also triggered a war of words between the ruling party and the political opposition over conduct and accountability in public office. The incident has also reignited a broader discussion about decorum in legislative bodies and the tone of political discourse in the country.
