UP floods: Akhilesh Yadav criticises Yogi govt for failed relief, event focus

  • Akhilesh Yadav accuses UP govt of focusing more on political events than flood relief efforts

  • Former CM questions why massive rallies are possible but rescue missions fail

  • Many areas in Uttar Pradesh face severe flooding amid poor relief and rescue operations

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has launched a sharp attack on the Uttar Pradesh government for what he described as a complete failure in handling the ongoing flood crisis. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the former Chief Minister accused the state of focusing more on managing VVIP political rallies than on ensuring public welfare and flood relief operations.

Several districts in Uttar Pradesh are reeling under the impact of relentless rainfall, overflowing rivers, and breached embankments, displacing thousands and damaging property and crops. In his statement, Akhilesh said:

When the state government can organise super VVIP rallies with all facilities, why has it failed to organise effective relief and rescue operations for flood victims?

Severe Flooding in UP Leaves Thousands Stranded

The monsoon season has brought widespread devastation across eastern and central Uttar Pradesh, with rivers like Ghaghra, Rapti, and Saryu flowing above danger levels. In many flood-affected districts, including Gonda, Balrampur, Bahraich, Shravasti, and Ayodhya, local residents complain of negligible government presence, lack of boats, food supplies, clean water, and medical help.

Dozens of villages are submerged, and makeshift shelters have been set up on highways and embankments, but relief materials have not reached many remote locations. Residents report loss of livestock, damaged homes, and failed crops, worsening their financial and emotional distress.

Akhilesh Highlights State Priorities

Akhilesh Yadav questioned the Yogi Adityanath-led government’s priorities, saying that while there is ample planning and funds for organising rallies, branding exercises, and political PR events, the same urgency is missing when it comes to public emergencies.

This isn’t the first time the Samajwadi Party leader has raised concerns over the Yogi government’s flood management strategies. In previous years too, Akhilesh has pointed out the lack of preparedness, inadequate infrastructure investment, and poor crisis coordination.

In his most recent post, he urged the government to shift its focus away from event management and instead direct efforts towards ground-level administration and relief distribution.

Government Response Under Scanner

Despite claims by state officials that relief camps, NDRF teams, and district administrators are actively engaged, ground reports and viral videos show stranded families, children crossing rivers on makeshift boats, and people crying for food and shelter.

Local opposition leaders say:

  • Emergency funds are delayed or misallocated

  • Real-time communication is lacking in rural blocks

  • There’s no transparency in the distribution of relief materials

The government has defended itself, stating that:

All resources are being deployed and rescue missions are underway. The flood situation is under continuous review.

However, public anger is brewing as victims demand faster, more visible relief measures. Many are also raising concerns about neglected embankment maintenance, which could have prevented some of the overflow incidents.

Politics in the Middle of a Crisis

The flood situation has given the opposition parties ammunition to question the BJP-led UP government, which is already under pressure ahead of upcoming local and assembly elections. Akhilesh Yadav’s remarks have resonated strongly with affected communities, many of whom feel abandoned in their time of need.

Political analysts believe the ongoing flood mismanagement could become a significant electoral issue if not handled promptly and transparently.

UP Floods: Ground Reality and What’s Needed

Reports from flood-hit zones indicate:

  • Over 200 villages affected in Bahraich, Gonda, Balrampur, and Ayodhya

  • Dozens of relief camps set up, but overcrowded and under-resourced

  • Agricultural damage in lakhs of hectares, with compensation not yet disbursed

Experts warn that with more rain expected, the situation could worsen unless proactive evacuation, timely resource deployment, and transparent relief coordination are implemented.

Citizens and NGOs have stepped up in some areas to distribute rations, arrange temporary shelter, and ferry stranded people using boats and tractors. However, without systematic government intervention, these efforts remain insufficient.

Conclusion: Leadership Under Test

The flooding in Uttar Pradesh poses a test of governance and administrative preparedness. As Akhilesh Yadav’s critique highlights, the contrast between grand political events and the ground-level suffering of flood victims is stark and politically sensitive.

Unless the Yogi Adityanath government takes swift and visible corrective steps, it risks losing public confidence—not just in flood-affected areas but across the state.

For now, the priority must shift to relief, rehabilitation, and long-term flood resilience infrastructure, rather than image management.
