Aim is to secure border regions and ensure lawful use of government and public land.
In a significant move aimed at securing border areas and maintaining lawful use of land, the Uttar Pradesh government under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched an aggressive crackdown on illegal encroachments and unauthorised establishments along the India-Nepal border.
The operation, which spans across sensitive districts within a 10–15 km stretch along the international boundary, has seen the demolition of hundreds of illegal structures. Officials confirmed that the move is part of a broader anti-encroachment drive intended to strengthen national security, maintain law and order, and ensure the proper use of public lands.
In Bahraich district alone, action was taken against 89 illegal encroachments, with authorities swiftly demolishing unauthorised constructions, including illegal religious structures. Shravasti district saw one of the most significant operations where 119 encroachments were cleared, including the closure of 17 unauthorised madrasas.
In other nearby districts:
-
Siddharthnagar witnessed action against 11 illegal structures.
-
Maharajganj authorities targeted 19 encroachments.
-
Balrampur identified 7 instances of illegal occupation of government land, of which two encroachments were removed voluntarily, while action is underway against the remaining.
The Uttar Pradesh government emphasized that the aim of the drive is two-fold: securing the sensitive Indo-Nepal border areas and reclaiming government land for appropriate developmental use.
Unauthorised Madrasas Shut in Shravasti
The situation in Shravasti district brought a specific focus on unauthorised madrasas. According to district officials, seven madrasas were closed for failing to submit valid documents necessary for their recognition.
The breakdown is as follows:
-
Three madrasas in Bhinga tehsil were sealed.
-
Four madrasas in Jamunaha tehsil were shut down.
District authorities stated that most of these madrasas were operating secretly, without any valid documentation. Some were reportedly running illegally from rented houses, private homes, and semi-constructed buildings, raising serious concerns over safety, regulation, and transparency.
District Minority Welfare Officer Devendra Ram told the press that many of these educational institutions were neither registered nor meeting the minimum operational standards, making them liable for immediate closure under the law.
Strict Monitoring and Border Security
The latest anti-encroachment drive comes against a backdrop of increasing concerns over the misuse of land near the international border. The Uttar Pradesh government reiterated that sensitive regions cannot afford unauthorised establishments which might pose a threat to national security.
The operation also aligns with broader efforts by the state to implement stricter monitoring mechanisms across border districts, ensuring that every religious, educational, and commercial establishment is duly registered and operates within the legal framework.
Officials highlighted that regular verifications and audits of religious and educational institutions are now a part of the standard procedure, especially in bordering districts.
Community Outreach and Voluntary Compliance
Interestingly, authorities reported voluntary compliance in several cases. In Balrampur, two illegal encroachments were removed voluntarily following official notices, showcasing the impact of proactive administrative outreach and communication.
The state administration has also stressed on community involvement by urging citizens to report any suspicious activities or illegal constructions. Public cooperation, they said, is vital for the success of the drive and for ensuring long-term safety.
Political and Social Implications
The crackdown is likely to have far-reaching political and social implications. While the government maintains that the drive is purely aimed at law enforcement and border security, various social organizations have called for ensuring fair and transparent action to prevent any unnecessary hardship to innocent citizens.
Nevertheless, the government has clarified that no legally compliant religious or educational institution will be harmed and that the operations are targeted strictly against illegal, unregistered, and unauthorized establishments.
Conclusion
The Uttar Pradesh government’s aggressive drive against illegal encroachments and the closure of unauthorized madrasas marks a major step toward securing sensitive border areas, upholding law and order, and ensuring the sanctity of government land.
The state’s message is clear: Unauthorized occupation of government land and secret operations of educational or religious institutions will not be tolerated.
As the drive continues, more checks, stricter regulations, and community participation are expected to play a critical role in sustaining lawful governance and border security.
