A US military aircraft carrying 104 illegal Indian immigrants is scheduled to land at Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport, Amritsar, on Wednesday afternoon. Initially, the flight was expected in the morning, but it has been delayed to the afternoon. The C-17 military plane is carrying individuals primarily from Punjab and surrounding regions, who had overstayed their work permits or entered the US through illegal means.
The Amritsar Police have taken precautionary measures, barricading roads leading to the Aviation Club at the airport and enhancing security in anticipation of the arrival. Upon landing, the deported individuals will first be taken to the Aviation Club, where they will undergo a thorough background check, including criminal and immigration records. After this, they will be allowed to leave.
State Authorities to Assist Deportees
According to Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, the state government has prepared to receive the immigrants and will establish counters at the airport to facilitate the process. The state authorities are already informed about the deportees' arrival, ensuring their smooth transition back to their respective states.
Punjab Minister’s Disappointment
Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, the Punjab NRI Affairs Minister, expressed regret over the US government’s decision to deport the immigrants. He emphasized that many of these individuals had contributed significantly to the US economy, and he believes they should have been granted permanent residency rather than deportation. He plans to meet with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar next week to discuss the issue and address the concerns of the Punjabis living in the US.
Minister Dhaliwal also highlighted that the majority of deportees had entered the US with valid work permits, but their visas eventually expired, leaving them to face illegal immigration issues. Many of these individuals had entered the US via illegal routes, spending significant sums of money to do so.
US Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants
Following Donald Trump's recent presidency, the US has launched a crackdown on illegal immigration, especially targeting individuals who entered the country unlawfully. This has impacted many individuals from Punjab and neighboring regions, who are now facing deportation.
Minister Dhaliwal urged Punjabis to avoid illegal migration routes and instead focus on acquiring skills and education to pursue legal immigration options. He encouraged people to explore legal avenues and acquire the necessary skills before making international travel plans.
This deportation reflects the broader global issues surrounding illegal immigration and the importance of adhering to immigration laws.
