What's covered under the Article:

  1. US egg prices have surged by 65% since January 2024 due to the bird flu outbreak.
  2. The US egg shortage has driven prices to a record $4.95 per dozen, with some areas seeing $10 rates.
  3. In contrast, India’s egg prices have remained stable, with only a 1.27% year-on-year increase.

The United States is facing an alarming surge in egg prices, with costs skyrocketing by 65% since January 2024 due to an ongoing bird flu outbreak. The nationwide average for one dozen Grade A eggs has now reached $4.95, setting an all-time high and surpassing the previous January 2023 record of $4.82. The sharp increase in US egg prices is burning a hole in the pockets of consumers, as eggs remain one of the most accessible protein sources for millions of Americans.

The outbreak of bird flu in the US has significantly reduced egg supply, forcing authorities to cull millions of chickens to contain the virus. With large-scale poultry farms housing millions of birds, even a single outbreak leads to massive losses, further driving up egg inflation. This price surge is reminiscent of 2015, when the last avian flu outbreak caused egg prices to become a major contributor to US food inflation.

The crisis is even more severe in some regions, where egg prices have exceeded $10 per dozen, especially for premium varieties. Despite government intervention, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has warned that egg prices may rise another 20% in 2025, making it harder for consumers to stock up on eggs. Many grocery store shelves remain empty, with retailers struggling to maintain supply amid the ongoing crisis.

While US inflation on eggs continues to surge, the situation in India remains stable. According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for January 2025, egg prices in India have only risen by 1.27% year-on-year. The urban egg inflation rate stands at 2.28%, while rural areas have experienced a much smaller 0.63% increase. These numbers indicate that, unlike the US food price crisis, India has managed to control egg inflation effectively.

India’s poultry industry is relatively insulated from the kind of large-scale avian flu outbreaks seen in the US. Additionally, government regulations and domestic supply chains have helped stabilize egg prices in India, ensuring minimal disruptions to consumers. With a high egg consumption rate in India, affordability remains a priority, preventing the kind of drastic price swings seen in US egg markets.

The difference in egg price trends in the US and India highlights the contrasting economic and agricultural policies of both nations. While bird flu in the US has triggered supply chain disruptions, leading to record-high US egg inflation, India’s egg market has remained resilient, ensuring stable egg prices for consumers across urban and rural regions. As the US struggles with food inflation, India’s steady market provides relief for millions dependent on eggs as an affordable protein source.
