- Ukrainian President Zelenskyy calls the ceasefire a positive step, urging the US to convince Russia to comply.
In a significant diplomatic development, US President Donald Trump announced that negotiators have traveled to Russia for discussions on a potential ceasefire with Ukraine. This follows Ukraine’s acceptance of a 30-day truce, which was reached after talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between senior officials from the United States and Ukraine.
Speaking in the Oval Office during a meeting with the Irish Prime Minister, Trump stated that his team was working to secure a temporary ceasefire, expressing optimism that Russian President Vladimir Putin would agree to the terms.
Trump’s Push for a Ceasefire Agreement
Trump reiterated his hopes that Russia would accept the truce, warning that without an agreement, the war would continue, causing more deaths and destruction.
"A while ago, Ukraine agreed to the ceasefire. Now we go to Russia, and hopefully, President Putin will agree to it also," he said.
Trump also mentioned ongoing negotiations over the next few days, involving both in-person and phone discussions. Vice President JD Vance confirmed the presence of US representatives engaging with Russian officials.
Ukraine’s Stand on the Ceasefire
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the development, calling it a positive step. However, he stressed that it was now up to the United States to convince Russia to comply.
"Ukraine is ready to accept this proposal—we see it as a positive step and are ready to take it. Now, it is up to the United States to convince Russia to do the same. If Russia agrees, the ceasefire will take effect immediately," Zelenskyy said in a video statement.
During the Jeddah discussions, US officials reportedly proposed an expanded ceasefire, covering not just the Black Sea but the entire frontline, halting missile, drone, and bomb attacks from both sides.
Steve Witkoff’s Expected Visit to Moscow
While Trump did not disclose specifics about the negotiating team, reports suggest that Steve Witkoff, his special envoy, is likely to visit Moscow for discussions with President Putin.
Trump emphasized the importance of securing an agreement, warning that without one, the war would continue, leading to further casualties and destruction.
What’s Next?
As the US delegation engages with Russian counterparts, the global community will closely monitor Moscow’s response. If Putin agrees, the 30-day ceasefire could mark a turning point in the three-year war. However, if negotiations stall, the conflict could persist, with continued military actions from both sides.
With high-stakes diplomacy in play, all eyes are on Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv, awaiting the next crucial move in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.
